Hillcross Primary School in the London Borough of Merton delivers CPD across the school by sharing and enhancing the skills of all its staff and by learning from each other.
The programme features teaching assistants exploring the effectiveness of special needs software and how nursery nurses are trained to take a full part in team teaching in reception.
We also sit in on some of the informal professional dialogues that take place in the school, as a Literacy Co-ordinator and a Year 2 teacher analyse their KS1 SATs results, an NQT reports back to the headteacher on a monitoring project she's been asked to do, and the SENCO briefs the deputy head on the training implications of the school's latest PANDA figures.

"John Carey, senior adviser with Durham LEA and a specialist in professional development, takes a critical look at CPD at Christ Church Primary and offers a few tips.
He stresses the advantages of school-based CPD and speaks to Deputy Head Colette Morris, about the school's policy of encouraging staff to share ideas and collaborate with one another.
The staff appreciate this and think training is essential if they are to progress and develop their skills.
John sits in on a peer observation session. All agree that more preparation time was needed to decide on the specific observation objective, and for both the watcher and the watched to look for CPD benefits.
John also demonstrates that children's views can be a rich source of CPD.
Overall he is positive about the school's learning culture but feels it is crucial that good ideas like peer observation are carefully structured for staff to get the best out of them."

Dovetailing individual CPD needs with overall school improvement can be difficult; focusing CPD on the school is an answer. CPD Leader Cynthia Francis does a sensitive but strategic job at Norbury Manor Business & Enterprise College for Girls, commented on by Vivienne Porritt of the Institute of Education.
Marie Nassor was based at school for her MA on teaching and learning; we see two students she's trained to observe lessons, with NQT Navpreet Gallimore. Karen Powell's school-based MA researches her own impact on student performance as a non-teaching Head of Year; Cynthia supports her as coach, not just administrator. Head of Sixth Form Rob Bradley is on 'Leadership Pathways', but also benefits from Cynthia's expert coaching.
Staff are in mixed 'co-coaching' teams, too. Cynthia herself is in a team with NQT Hannah Smith and TA Anne Savage, who are being encouraged to actively critique lessons so that other staff can gain from the insights only TAs have.

"Marcia Gladwin is a holistic therapy specialist at City and Islington College, north London. This film follows her to see how she nurtures and empowers her Level 3 Health and Beauty massage theory class to develop their independent learning skills. She fine-tunes the students to become professional in their thinking about how they will deal with clients in the future. Her mentor, Helen Kent, is Deputy Director for Health and Beauty, and she encourages Marcia to use role-play to further develop these skills in her students. In the following week's lesson the students, working in groups of three as client, therapist and observer, act out a scenario to help them understand how massage effects the emotions. The lesson does not quite go to plan but Marcia cleverly turns it around and it makes it part of the lesson. All are totally engaged!"

Oaks Park High School rates secondary science teacher Hana Abbasi as 'good'. As part of our challenge we bring in top inspector Clare Gillies to assess one of Hana's Year 8 science lessons. The inspector's feedback after Hana's lesson on digestion, highlights some clear areas for improvement. Hana also gets feedback and advice from Teachers TV online community who watch footage of her lesson. She's then off to our 'clinic' to get some one-to-one CPD from secondary science expert Jigna Surani to work on pedagogy. Plus Hana gets practical advice from our presentation and communications expert Mo Shapiro. She then has just three weeks back in the classroom to put all their advice into action before the Clare Gillies returns to observe a second lesson and deliver her final verdict. Will Hana make the grade? Will she raise her game sufficiently to go from 'good' to 'outstanding'?
