Lampton School, west London, rates secondary history teacher Esther Arnott as 'good'. As part of our challenge we bring in top Inspector Clare Gillies to assess one of Esther’s Year 7 lessons. The Inspector’s feedback after Esther’s lesson, on the impact of William of Normandy’s rule over the English, highlights some clear areas for improvement. She’s then off to our clinic to get some one-to-one CPD from history advisor Michael Riley on pedagogy, and tips from our voice and communications expert Ulrika Schulte-Baukloh. In addition Esther gets input from an online community who have viewed a video of her first lesson. She then has just three weeks back in the classroom to put their advice into action before the Inspector returns to observe a second lesson and deliver her final verdict. Will Esther make the grade? Will she raise her game sufficiently to go from ‘good’ to ‘outstanding’.

"A common concern in Primary Design and Technology is that learning about principles and processes can be weakened by focusing too much on the quality of the end result.
In this programme we see how one teacher sets about a Year 1 class design and technology project on the theme of ""moving pictures"", using the story ""Handa's Surprise"" as inspiration.
KS1 teacher Teresa Wilton is then joined by Cornwall LEAs D&T Adviser, David Prest, and fellow primary teacher Pauline Hannigan, to watch and comment on key moments filmed over the two days of the project. They discuss how to best ensure the end result does not become the main focus of the task, and how to ensure that the processes of designing, making and evaluating are given the prominence needed."

"Modern methods of studying geography encourages the development of enquiry skills. The lesson explored in this programme offers children an immediate chance to develop these as well as giving them the opportunity to vividly use their imaginations.
Debbie King, a Key Stage 1 teacher at Horwood & Newton Tracey Primary School in north Devon is shown teaching a unit of work for KS1 geography called 'At the Seaside'. It can be taught across one day or over a period of weeks.
Debbie evaluates the unit with David Weatherley, Devon Curriculum Services Geography Advisor and Alison Alldridge, Geography Coordinator at the school.
The lesson features enquiry, imagination, and evaluation of images of the seaside. Geography is then combined with literacy as the children fit words to the pictures and write postcards using geographic vocabulary."

Panorama goes back to school to examine government plans to send in the troops to Britain's troubled classrooms. Can they help restore discipline, leadership and respect? It is an idea born in the USA, where around 15 thousand ex-military personnel have become teachers and done their bit in some of America's toughest inner-city schools. Vivian White reports on the military maneuvers claimed to be building David Cameron's so-called "Big Society"

"John Bayley works with two Year 3 teachers on peer observation. Experienced teacher Sarah and recent NQT Sophia teach the same literacy lessons but in very different styles.
Sarah notices that during Sophia's lesson some children are distracted during the lengthy feedback sessions and suggests that the adoption of talk partners would improve their focus and quicken the pace.
When sitting in on Sarah's lesson, Sophia is impressed by the way the children are encouraged to come up with their own success criteria before embarking on a piece of work. John also points out to Sophia how Sarah makes good use of higher level questioning.
Having found the experience valuable, Sophia is keen to put the new ideas into practice and to continue observations in the future."
