Join Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis, authors of Strategies That Work, in Barb Smith's reading workshop as her students begin to explore the wild and wooly world of nonfiction where merely getting the facts isn't enough. Nonfiction readers need to merge their thinking with the information to learn, understand, and remember it. In Think Nonfiction!the focus is on comprehension strategies for gaining information--specifically noticing new learning, asking questions, and determining importance. We watch Stephanie and Anne teach alongside Barb as she launches a nonfiction study and helps kids learn how to read for information, choose a topic, and do research. Stephanie does a mini-lesson to model how she stops and thinks when she encounters new information as she reads. Anne and Barb demonstrate how they read as partners and respond to new information. Then Barb, Anne, and Stephanie move about the room conferring with kids as they read a nonfiction article and use these strategies to enhance their understanding. Filmed over an eight month period, the program shows how student skills and abilities take time to develop. The program also shows how teachers and literacy coaches can collaborate over time. Throughout the year, Carolyn and Jennifer reflect on student performance, and work together to refine and tweak their classroom instruction to better meet the needs of the students. Providing models for peer observation as well, the video offers reflections by individual teachers and groups of teachers as well as the debrief sessions with Jennifer and Carolyn. Andy Krokou, the School Manager, is looking for someone with quiet authority who will engage with the pupils so that some learning will have happened by the end of the lesson. Andy is well prepared and gives Emma her timetable, a photo sheet of the pupils and a plan of the school.
Emma's day starts well, teaching maths with specific work left for the students. A later science lesson on forces is more tricky and she talks about the range of techniques and skills she uses to get the best out of each lesson.
Her last lesson of the day is the most testing. She gives out 6 report cards but still manages some quality teaching. Andy invites her back."
