Headteachers and teachers who have visited schools in Latin America demonstrate how their experiences have invigorated teaching and learning in secondary and primary schools in England. The visits have led to international communication between pupils about their schools and lifestyles, but have also brought new ideas and insights into the classroom. This programme features South Dartmoor Community College, where the technology department uses designs from Brazil; West Drayton Primary, in west London, which is introducing Portuguese; Willingdon Community School in Sussex, where the citizenship class debates the meaning of national identity; and Willingdon Primary, which is teaching Spanish to all years including reception. The programme highlights the importance of international partnerships to help prepare young people for their place in a global society.

South Dartmoor Community College's contact with a Brazilian school led to a review of evaluation policies; now pupils evaluate their teachers. Longsands Community College, in St Neots, began to reach out more into the community, and work more closely with other agencies concerned with its students, after learning from Mexico. Also featured is the headteacher of West Drayton Primary, in west London, who made a life-changing decision after meeting teachers and students in Brazil.

To help make sure that your teaching is not needlessly repeated at KS3, and that your lessons are as effective as they could be, a close colloboration between yourself and your secondary colleagues is a must.
Getting over this 'transition gap' is a difficult issue. With this in mind, the Cambridgeshire Transition Project, involving a selection of primary and secondary teachers coming together in a residential workshop, developed a range of schemes of work, designed to raise standards at KS2 and encourage more effective teaching at KS3.
Showcasing one of the schemes of work and highlighting the findings of the project, this programme offers you some great ideas and ready-made resources to help you work with your secondary colleagues to make sure that learning isn't lost in transition!

Teacher study groups are a wonderful tool for building a reflective, research-based community within schools. This video provides a window into the study group process as literacy specialist Jennifer Allen facilitates a group exploring ways to improve writing workshops. Showing excerpts from the fall and spring meetings of the group, the video details the evolution of thinking and discussion as practices are introduced and tried in the classroom, and as reflections on those successes and failures are shared among the members of the group. The extensive viewing guide includes sample formats, suggestions of books and videos for groups, and detailed advice for launching and sustaining study groups over time.
