"Marcia Gladwin is a holistic therapy specialist at City and Islington College, north London. This film follows her to see how she nurtures and empowers her Level 3 Health and Beauty massage theory class to develop their independent learning skills. She fine-tunes the students to become professional in their thinking about how they will deal with clients in the future. Her mentor, Helen Kent, is Deputy Director for Health and Beauty, and she encourages Marcia to use role-play to further develop these skills in her students. In the following week's lesson the students, working in groups of three as client, therapist and observer, act out a scenario to help them understand how massage effects the emotions. The lesson does not quite go to plan but Marcia cleverly turns it around and it makes it part of the lesson. All are totally engaged!"

Oaks Park High School rates secondary science teacher Hana Abbasi as 'good'. As part of our challenge we bring in top inspector Clare Gillies to assess one of Hana's Year 8 science lessons. The inspector's feedback after Hana's lesson on digestion, highlights some clear areas for improvement. Hana also gets feedback and advice from Teachers TV online community who watch footage of her lesson. She's then off to our 'clinic' to get some one-to-one CPD from secondary science expert Jigna Surani to work on pedagogy. Plus Hana gets practical advice from our presentation and communications expert Mo Shapiro. She then has just three weeks back in the classroom to put all their advice into action before the Clare Gillies returns to observe a second lesson and deliver her final verdict. Will Hana make the grade? Will she raise her game sufficiently to go from 'good' to 'outstanding'?

As a non-fiction genre, travel writing offers an excellent way in to understanding how texts work in the real world, and particularly, the ways in which they can fulfil more than one purpose. In this programme, English teacher Ava Houris, from Parliament Hill School for Girls in North London, teaches travel writing in preparation for the reading and writing requirements of the GCSE English exam. In conversation with consultant, Barbara Bleiman, of the English and Media Centre, Ava explores ways of going beyond the most basic features of text types, audiences and purposes, and uses a range of practical classroom strategies - such as graphic methods of planning, modeling writing and analysing real texts - to help students be more creative and lively in their non-fiction writing.

"Incorporating art into Religious Education can be an intimidating prospect, especially if you're no artist. But Angela Saunders, one of the teachers from the KS3/4 RE programme, ""Art workshop"", shows that you don't have to be a Dali or a Picasso to use art effectively for RE.
Putting what she learnt from the workshop into practice, Angela road-tests the artistic technique of ""art sketchbook"" with her Year 7 class in a lesson on the Jewish story of Passover. To reflect on how this went Angela is joined by Paul Hobbs, the artist who led the workshop, and David Griffith, an RE consultant with experience as an Ofsted inspector.
With plenty of in-depth analysis on the challenges of incorporating art and the difficulties Angela faced, ""KS3 RE: Integrating Art"" also offers practical advice on how best to utilise art in the classroom and use it to help bring religious material to life."

In this video Dan and Nathan introduce a simple idea to make registration classes more useful and engaging for students. Rather than just saying yes to their names, students answer a question related to the work they are doing.
They dramatise these ideas in an appealing but informative way as a comedy double act, acting as both teachers and pupils."

This film is aimed at teachers who want learners to develop more self-awareness of their ability, their development through introspection & through peer-to-peer analysis. Kathryn Sanders, head of innovation, at St Joseph?s College in Swindon is working with a Year 9 group to get them to analyse their strengths and weaknesses in all aspects of their life. She then asks them to look at a small piece of literacy ? it?s an English lesson ? & analyse the writing of their neighbour?s work. Students then feedback to each other & often find that they are achieving at a higher level than they realised. Kathryn sees this as a vital life skill & important as students prepare for GCSEs & more independent work in the years ahead. Teachers of Year 9 students will find this helpful, though the strategy could be used from Year 7. This style works particularly well in English but could be adapted for many subjects. Resources for self-assessment are available with this film which is 3rd in a series of 3
