"Valentines High School rates secondary maths teacher Lisa Essop as 'good'.
As part of our challenge we bring in top inspector Clare Gillies to assess one of Lisa's Year 7 lessons.
After observing Lisa's lesson on angles, the inspector highlights a need to tackle differentiation and give some real life context to the mathematics. Lisa's then off to our 'clinic' to get some one-to-one CPD on pedagogy from secondary maths expert John Wilkinson. Lisa also gets advice from our presentation and communications expert Mo Shapiro.
She then has just three weeks back in the classroom to put their advice into action before the inspector returns for the final verdict. Will Lisa make the grade? Will she raise her game sufficiently to go from 'good' to 'outstanding'?"

Student teachers enter the world of education with a range of backgrounds and experiences. Being paired with a good mentor makes all the difference to their chances of a rewarding placement. There is professional satisfaction in the pairing for the mentor too. This programme explores the role of teacher mentor through the relationship between Jude, who has been a teacher since 2003 and a mentor for four months, and Christobel, a mature student teacher in her first year of a flex mod course at the University of Cumbria. Christobel chose this course to fit in with her busy life as a married mother of two who also does 13 hours of teaching support each week. Jude has no problem mentoring someone older than herself as she is keen to pass on her own positive experiences of being mentored. She also believes that mentoring allows her to reflect on her own teaching methods which in turn can only benefit the children in her class.

Headteachers and teachers who have visited schools in Latin America demonstrate how their experiences have invigorated teaching and learning in secondary and primary schools in England. The visits have led to international communication between pupils about their schools and lifestyles, but have also brought new ideas and insights into the classroom. This programme features South Dartmoor Community College, where the technology department uses designs from Brazil; West Drayton Primary, in west London, which is introducing Portuguese; Willingdon Community School in Sussex, where the citizenship class debates the meaning of national identity; and Willingdon Primary, which is teaching Spanish to all years including reception. The programme highlights the importance of international partnerships to help prepare young people for their place in a global society.

Discover how ideas can transfer effectively from one school to another, how communication can take place across a network.
With Networked Learning firmly on the agenda as one of the ways of raising standards, experts and teachers reveal their tips and hints and give advice about launching and sustaining a successful network.
Contributors to the programme include David Jackson who is on the Networked Learning Group at the National College of School Leadership. Since the programme has been in place it has been his job to support the networks and to and encourage more schools to embrace the concept. Charles Desforges a former professor of education at Exeter University has plenty of personal experience of school networks and features in the programme as well as Terry Harris a primary school headteacher who has been part of a network of small rural schools in Sussex known as the NEARS group for nearly 20 years.

With the deputies gone, a new leadership team takes charge at Daubeney Primary School. But the demands of last term have caught up with Wanda, the new headteacher, and shortly after Easter she falls ill. In her absence the three new assistant heads are left to hold the fort. It isn't just Wanda who is off sick but 12 other members of staff as well.
When Wanda returns it is clear there is a lot of work to do. The Early Years teaching is entirely overhauled and teachers and teaching assistants are retrained to work with a more child-centred approach. Some staff find the challenges difficult and Wanda feels she still doesn't have a team.
With the help of the Learning Trust Wanda reviews the school's planning policies. The relentless pressures are taking their toll on everyone and predictably Wanda questions why she became a headteacher, but when she thinks of all the children she is helping, she remembers what attracted her to the top job.

This programme looks at the vital importance of teamwork and the results gained by teachers rejecting old-fashioned methods of working summed up by the old adage of 'shutting the classroom door and getting on with it'.
Headteacher Carole Couch talks about how she and colleagues turned round a failing school - Priory Lane Junior School in Lincolnshire, thanks in part to successful teamwork. The programme also looks at how teachers, support staff and the leadership team worked together successfully on a literacy project after the literacy co-ordinator became concerned about attainment. The same principles of teamwork and collaboration are applied to the successful running of the school's nurture group for vulnerable children. And the programme looks beyond the school gates to show how teamwork is now being applied to networks of schools in the local area which may have common concerns or shared aims.

"Starting with B for beginnings this programme takes an alphabetical journey through the key issues affecting lesson planning featuring twelve teachers from across the UK sharing their strategies for success at secondary.
The teachers discuss their own tried and tested methods for planning lessons, including how they plan for differentiation, different strategies for engaging students in their lessons, and how to plan for different endings to lessons.
The teachers also talk about planning to be flexible, as you never know when the lesson plan needs to be scrapped, how to plan for progression after a lesson and what can go wrong with planning.
This programme is part of a series where secondary teachers share their tried and tested strategies for success in the classroom, from group work to creativity and time management."

"Two Heads of Department, in two very different schools build their leadership capacity through 'distributed leadership' and 'learning-centered leadership'.
Rob Ford, Head of History at Ridings School in South Gloucestershire works with a group of colleagues to move forward international education in the school. He models his leadership style around the notion of 'distributed leadership' and we see how this works in practice. He works to ensure that his group are able to communicate with and influence others and in turn are influenced by them.
Marnie Weedon, Head of Maths at the City Academy in Bristol champions a culture of learning based on building 'learning power', promoting the process of learning for staff and pupils alike. Professor Guy Claxton, who devised the system, discusses how he believes rewarding pupils for ""Resilliance, Resourcefulness, Responsibility and Reciprocity"" has contributed to the successful culture of learning now present in the Academy."
