"Transitions are crucial, possibly the most important moments in your lesson according to Trevor Wright, senior education lecturer at the University of Worcester.
Far more than just closing down or setting up the next task, he believes they are the moments when the learning in the lesson lives. Often lesson plans show large places for pupil activity, with lots of preparation activity going into the resources the teacher plans to use. But where is the teacher in the plan?
Trevor looks at how transitions can hold the lessons together - or cause them to collapse. He considers how transitions are the moments to define and evaluate, and offers practical advice on getting the balance right.

"Taking a class you don?t know can prompt fear in the most experienced teacher. But Headteacher Geoff Barton recommends drawing from what he calls the ?micro-skills? of the effective teacher.
These are key skills effective teachers appear to have, he explains to trainee teachers at his school, King Edward VI School in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk.
Taking ownership of the classroom from the moment you enter, is key to a successful learning experience. Even the smallest symbols such as asking pupils to flick on a light switch, show authority lies with the teacher from the first minutes of the lesson.
Geoff looks at where the effective teacher stands, the use of silence and how using body language can influence a class you don?t know.

Student teachers enter the world of education with a range of backgrounds and experiences. Being paired with a good mentor makes all the difference to their chances of a rewarding placement and a successful career. This programme explores the role of teacher mentor through the relationship between Margaret, an experienced teacher who has been mentoring for four years, and Emma a second year student. Margaret thinks that mentoring develops your own CPD by making you more reflective about your own practice, it makes you realise you're actually a skilful practitioner yourself. And it's good to have the opportunity to observe and learn more about your own class while your student is leading the teaching. Emma has to fit her course work and teaching practice around her role as a Carer. She says Margaret has been very supportive and is aware of her home circumstances, which can be very demanding. This knowledge takes the pressure off and enables her to make the placement work.

South Dartmoor Community College's contact with a Brazilian school led to a review of evaluation policies; now pupils evaluate their teachers. Longsands Community College, in St Neots, began to reach out more into the community, and work more closely with other agencies concerned with its students, after learning from Mexico. Also featured is the headteacher of West Drayton Primary, in west London, who made a life-changing decision after meeting teachers and students in Brazil.

Wanda Noakes, the new headteacher at Daubeney Primary in Hackney, north London, returns after her first half term break with renewed enthusiasm. Her plan to involve parents more works well and they come up with ideas to celebrate Black History Month. Ten weeks into her leadership she feels pupils and parents are on side but there is still a lot to do to establish a good rapport with staff. The allocation of teaching and learning responsibilities is an issue and her two deputies feel she is introducing too many changes too quickly. Wanda disagrees. She feels the changes are important for the pupils. She also has to tell them that she will only be able to afford one deputy by 2008. Wanda was aware that parts of her job would be tough but feels the qualification for new heads helped her prepare. As Christmas approaches Wanda receives good news about her children's centre and gets some positive feedback from staff. Her advice for new heads? Grit your teeth and have lots of early nights.

"John Bayley works with two very different teachers on peer observation. Art AST Megan Lister is going to give tips to Spanish teacher Fadhila Hernandez, who's keen to give her students more independence. Fadhila takes great care to encourage the less able students to participate but points out some bright girls who are less engaged. John suggests differentiating from the top.
Megan and Fahdila explore how grouping the able students together could enable them to embark on more challenging work. In Megan's lesson, Fadhila sees how the children use a framework of success criteria to judge the skill level of their own work, which gives them the confidence to work independently."

Is time management for teachers just a matter of common sense or is it a skill you need to learn? Eight teachers from schools across the UK talk about the problems they have managing their own time and the strategies they've used that have worked for them. The teaching profession is a list- making profession, but everyone is occasionally guilty of displacement activities, whether that is rearranging your noticeboard when you are meant to be writing the SEF or spending hours on the beautifying of the classroom when you are meant to be planning. How do the teachers in this programme avoid wasting their time? These teachers trade their tips for saving time on marking, tell us how they say no when they have to say no, and how they make sure parents can help them save time.

"Julie and Dwight are learning mentors at the Ellen Wilkinson School in east London. They deal with a whole variety of behavioural, medical and emotional issues which might present barriers to learning for pupils at the school. We see Julie working with Toni (Year 6) and her mother Terri, who has had real difficulty persuading Toni to come to school and stay in lessons. One of Dwight's jobs is to run an anger management clinic with young boys at the school.
At New City Primary School also in the London Borough of Newham, learning mentors Mandy and Teasie work to build links between the school and the community. Mandy runs a breakfast club every morning, which helps her to spot problems before they occur. Teasie outlines how she has helped Salsibill overcome some of the difficulties she had coming to the UK from France and then having a major operation on her leg. Headteacher Jackie knows that she could not now run the school without her learning mentors."
