Abundant Land is a one-hour documentary about a Hawaiian community on Moloka’i opposing the biotech industry’s use of the island to test genetically engineered seeds. Agrochemical biotech corporations are depleting Moloka’i’s topsoil and freshwater while contributing to dust storms that spread pesticides into the ocean and surrounding communities. Abundant Land offers a historical look at the intrusion and political underpinnings of chemical-intensive farming in Hawaii while portraying the rich legacy of traditional Hawaiian land management and farming self-sufficiency.The film’s narrative develops through a series of personal and community stories as the documentary follows several dedicated residents who seek transparency about the agrochemical testing being done on their island, and their ensuing efforts to heal and repair it. From initial grassroots efforts that give rise to organized actions, Moloka’i residents learn through leadership and study to use permaculture techniques to restore an integrated food system based on ancient Hawaiian farming practices.Featuring interviews with Dr. Vandana Shiva, Walter Ritte, Malia Akutagawa, Mercy Ritte, Geoff Lawton, and Hector Valenzuela.

Global aerosol distribution, FIM-Chem data. The FIM-Chem model was created following the success of the original FIM Model (Finite Volume Icosahedral Model). The FIM-Chem is the FIM model with chemistry and aerosol modules added. Aerosols are one of the biggest uncertainties in climate models due to their varied effects on radiation and cloud physics. The FIM-Chem allows researchers to forecast and study the behaviour of aerosols in the atmosphere, leading to the potential for better Earth system modelling for climate prediction. In this sequence, the FIM-Chem model is used to trace the presence of three aerosols from August 27, 2009 through September 7, 2009. Green shading is dust, red shading is black carbon aerosols and blue is organic carbon aerosols. When there are multiple aerosols present in one location, the color for the aerosols is combined. The two types of carbon often occur together, though in different proportions. Areas of anthropogenic emissions tend to have a redder color while areas of burning, such as wildfires, tend to have a more purplish-pink color because the ratio of organic carbons to black carbons varies for the two emissions sources. Wildfires have a high ratio of organic carbon to black carbon. During the time period of this dataset there were wildfires in California, Alaska and British Columbia and biomass burning in Sub-Equatorial Africa and the Amazon region. The white shading is from the presence of all three aerosols. This can be seen in southern Europe where the anthropogenic emissions from Europe are mixing with the dry, dusty air from the Sahara.

It's been called the lungs of the earth. But the Amazon is also a lawless jungle, where criminals and profiteers plunder the forest for its riches. Communities are battling to stop loggers stripping the rainforest of its ancient timber, but many people depend on revenue from the illegal trade. The result is that some towns are in civil conflict, with neighbours clashing over the exploitation of their unique environment, one of the largest remaining wilderness areas on Earth. The state of Para alone exports billions of dollars in illegal hardwood. It seems that everywhere people are cutting down trees without permission. Commercial loggers send armies with chainsaws to cut timber for export, almost always illegally. The Amazon River is the heart of the illegal logging trade. The logs are simply loaded on a boat and exported to countries like the United States, Europe and Australia. Once the valuable timber has been removed, the land is given over to cattle ranchers and soy farmers. All over the Amazon people are being run off their land in growing numbers. Growing numbers of profiteers - ranchers, farmers, and land grabbers - are seizing whole areas of the Amazon at gunpoint from their inhabitants. People don't want to leave their homes but with no one enforcing the law they're afraid and there's no one here to protect them. But when the law is enforced, this causes other problems. The federal environmental authorities shut the logging town of Uruara down because 80% of the timber trade here is illegal. Everyone, from the foresters to shopkeepers, and even the men driving horse carts, have found themselves without jobs. Says a spokesman for the authorities: "When we go to bed at night it really is hard to know that breadwinners won't get any wages the next day and sometimes their families will go hungry. But that is our job, unfortunately. We have to do it."

The Swamp tells the dramatic story of humanity's attempts to conquer the Florida Everglades, one of nature's most mysterious and unique ecosystems. Home to a profusion of plants and animals found nowhere else on the continent, the Everglades was an immense watershed covering the southern half of the Florida peninsula. In the 19th century, however, most Americans believed swamps were filled with diseases and noxious reptiles and saw them as obstacles to the nation's progress. The idea of draining the Everglades became the goal of many entrepreneurs, politicians and salesmen who saw great potential in turning the massive wetland into a profitable enterprise. Altering the landscape of the Everglades unleashed a torrent of unintended consequences, from catastrophic floods to brutal droughts. Told through the lives of a handful of colorful and resolute characters, from hucksters to politicians to unlikely activists, The Swamp explores the repeated efforts to transform what was seen as a vast and useless wasteland into an agricultural and urban paradise, ultimately leading to a passionate campaign to preserve America's greatest wetland.
