Made for the United Nations, this documentary chronicles the logging damage that has taken place in the forests of Finnish Lapland over the past 50 years. Home to the indigenous Saami peoples, these Northern old growth forests are essential to Saami reindeer herding, a traditional way of life that the Saami hope to continue into future generations. Population growth in Finland has created economic pressure - prompting migration to the Saami lands in the North. The resulting forest cutting severely depletes the lichen necessary for free reindeer grazing, and logging infrastructure disrupts the entire forest ecosystem. A tense conflict emerges between the alliance of Greenpeace and Saami activists, who in 2005 set up a "Forest Rescue Station" in the woods to stop the cutting, and logging workers, worried about losing their jobs, who create their own "anti-terror camp" in response. The situation becomes dramatic as those in the "anti-terror" camp continually assault the Greenpeace workers with noise and threatening behavior. Last Yoik in Saami Forests? implicates the state-owned logging company Metsahallitus in the exploitation of Saami resources, and shows that the Finnish government has done little to preserve this natural resource. The film explores possible economic alternatives to logging, such as tourism, as well as more efficient uses for Lappish timber than paper pulp, fuel or railways stocks - the wood is an excellent building material that could be commanding a higher price. The issue of indigenous land rights is the heart of the problem, and as of the completion of this film in 2007, it remains unresolved.

Forests. Just how important are they? Frankly, they are essential to sustain life on Earth; we need them to sustain clean air and water, not to mention the shade and shelter they provide, along with the multiple products that are derived from them or the domain they offer the world's wildlife. Unfortunately, all too often they are at risk from deforestation and the purpose of this short, reverent program is to underscore to viewers of all ages that a forest is our friend, an important biome that is a natural living organism. Here we are offered a warm, sensitive look at the pastoral beauty of life in the forest with the hope of inspiring viewers to look for the magic and mystery of the forest, to explore the nature and feeling of the forest, and to ultimately remember our responsibility to preserve and protect this treasured natural resource.

'Highly Recommended. An outstanding program that underscores the importance of the world's trees.' -SECA Review Trees. We know how vital a natural resource they are and how important they are for the quality of air we breathe; so, obviously, nobody in this age of awareness should want to see the forests disappear; however, that is not always the case. People everywhere don't want to give up paper or the thousands of other products made from trees; the world is dependent on forest products, not to mention the jobs that are created from providing these modern-day necessities; thus we have a serious issue we have to face. The good news is forests are a renewable resource; they don't have to needlessly disappear; there is something each and every one of us can do. This important documentary vividly illustrates the problems we face as we try to reconcile our dependence on forest products and the jobs they create with our concern for natural resources. Here we are introduced to two groups with common sense approaches to improving the environment, Project Learning Tree and Wildlife Action. Overall, we discover the challenge is to make decisions in our daily lives that ensure our forests remain a renewable natural resource and a place of beauty for all to enjoy.

Growing trees is not totally the job of Mother Nature anymore! Making sure logging doesn’t tax future growth too much is an ever more increasingly important task. Using a relatively new high tech invention, the helicopter, to harvest hasn’t been around that long but offers an interesting alternative to logging. We look at growing, managing and cutting of the new sustainable forest.

Eco surfboard- Surfers have a unique link with nature and many are fervent environmentalists. But in actual fact, most of them are riding some of the most toxic pieces of sports equipment on the planet. Nearly a million surfboards a year are produced worldwide--almost all of them fibreglass and petrochemical based. Amazon Forestry- For almost three years, deforestation of the Amazon slowed. But in 2007, high commodity prices led to an unprecedented rate of illegal logging and clearing for farmland. The government struggles to enforce the law in the vast rainforest, which covers an area almost as large as Australia. But offering some hope is the move towards managed forest areas. One project on the Jari River in northern Brazil is being hailed as a conservation model. Whale Sharks- Deep, deep down in the oceans, live the world’s largest fish. Measuring up to 20 metres, the Whale Sharks are yet another species on the red list, marked as vulnerable. Each September these magnificent animals migrate to an area north of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, where they feed at the surface. 2007’s gathering was unusually large. Coco Nets- Every year the islands of the Philippines are devastated as mudslides inevitably follow heavy storms. People are left homeless, their houses totally destroyed. Now a clever idea using a simple material is making a big difference. Waterfall- We know global warming causes extreme weather. But sometimes a freak event can bring a pleasant surprise. In the north east of Estonia is the country’s highest waterfall. It’s a spectacular sight at any time, but in February 2008 the 25 metre high Valaste Waterfall was transformed into a magical wonderland. Tibet Glaciers- Mount Kawagebo is one of Tibetan Buddhism’s eight sacred peaks. It’s Mingyong glacier--China’s lowest--is one of the world’s fastest receding glaciers. Since the late 1800s it has receded 2.7 kilometres up the mountain, and over the last four years retreated 200 metres.

Making a Living: Local Conservation Work in Indonesia
produced by Dr. Anne Zeller, 1948-; in A Model for Conservation (Watertown, MA: Documentary Educational Resources (DER)), 3 mins
In this segment we learn how locals are finding new ways of making money, through working with international research facilities. For example, instead of logging, natives are now helping patrol the forest. Locals have also switched from subsistence farming to growing commercial crops.
