The exponential increase in the number of humans on the planet has resulted in the urgent need to find new strategies to deal with the housing issue. At a time when the future of the planet is a constant source of concern, it is worthwhile to re-examine how we design and build our homes and cities in order to meet the challenges of sustainable development. Constructing, using, maintaining and even destroying buildings incurs significant environmental costs, which is why some are working on concepts that run counter to conventional trends in architecture and are attempting to adapt new building projects to today’s realities.

Abu Dhabi is the biggest of the United Arab Emirates sitting in the heart of the oil rich Persian Gulf. Oil represents more than two thirds of this city state’s economy and with such easy access to all that black gold, the citizens of Abu Dhabi have become one of the most polluting on earth. Cheap fuel means big cars, year round air conditioning and sweet water, which comes from an energy intensive desalination process. And yet Abu Dhabi recently announced one of the most ambitious development projects in the world. The construction of Masdar, the world’s first zero carbon, zero waste, car free city. The 22 billion dollar project when it’s finished in 2016, will be home to 40 000 people, an academic institute, a manufacturing hub for solar power and desalination, have no greenhouse gas emissions, no waste and a personal transport system instead of cars. Great Idea, but can it work? The team has just 18 months to get the first phase out of the ground (the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology). And in the Middle East they don’t do things by halves. It’s not only the building that must be green, but the process itself, ‘building the building’. This film follows the trials and tribulations of Sanad, Meg, Chris and Samir as they struggle to build the prototype city on time and on budget in Abu Dhabi’s punishing heat.

Cairo, a city of 16 million, is one of the most densely populated in the world, with only one square foot of green space per person prior to 2005. His Highness the Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims, saw the need to relieve this congestion. The result is Al-Azhar Park: a 500-year-old dump-turned-"urban lung" that provides much-needed green space and a source of civic pride.

In Pembrokeshire, Wales, the cutest, handmade houses have been popping up around the county. These wee homes, made of natural, locally sourced materials and scavenged bits from the surrounding countryside, embody low-impact living. What exactly does that mean? It means that the inhabitants who built these houses, like Simon and Jasmine Dale, grow and cultivate the vast majority of what they consume. The two have been living in their very own hobbit-sized house since 2003. And now, they're helping others build similar homes in the Lammas community—the country's first eco-village. Needless to say, the Bagginses would approve.

Australia House- This Sydney home looks like any other in the street, but it is almost completely self-sufficient. The owners spent around 80,000 Australian dollars (US $66,500) on power and water-saving devices for their new home. Learning About Plants- The Royal Horticulture Society’s new glasshouse at Wisley, England, is huge. The size of ten tennis courts, it houses exotic plants from around the world, and also gives people the chance to learn more about plants. Paris Bicycles- The City of Paris has introduced a large scale bicycle hire scheme in a bid to cut pollution and city congestion. Philippines Packaging- Each year around 100 million tonnes of plastic is produced worldwide. Despite some efforts to recycle plastic it often ends up in dumps or clogs waterways. In the Philippines the mounting problem of waste has prompted some businesses to find a better way. Israel Solar- Solar power is a potentially limitless and pure solution to the problems of fossil fuel and nuclear energy. But the big drawback is its cost. Changing all that however, scientists at Israel’s National Centre for Solar Energy have found a way to produce large scale solar power at a competitive price. Focus On Climate Change- The well respected Hooper’s Gallery in East London showcases contemporary work by top British photographers. In an unusual exhibition it’s teamed up with the National Trust, Europe’s biggest conservation organisation, with over 3 million members in the UK alone. The result is ‘exposed’, a collection of pictures that captures the reality of climate change in the UK. China Green Olympics- The Olympic motto is 'faster, higher, stronger'. In 2008, you probably can add the word 'greener'. Since its winning bid in 2001 the Chinese government has steadily worked to clean up host city, Beijing, one of the most polluted cities in the world.

Condors Released: High in the Andes Mountains, in a place where local condors were hunted to extinction, six were recently given a new chance. Huge conservation efforts have improved their numbers, but condors remain vulnerable. Waste To Home Furnishings: Tucked away in a quiet London street is ‘Fabrications’, showcasing and selling the ultimate in green chic for the home. Making clever use of items normally destined for landfill, designer Barley Massey, creates and sells attractive soft furnishings and accessories. Indonesian Coral Reefs: Indonesia’s coral reefs house 97% of the world’s reef species. Yet rising sea temperatures threaten their existence. Fuel-cell Taxis: In Tokyo, a chauffeur driven car service is now operating a fleet of Nissan X-Trail fuel cell vehicles. This is the first time a hire car service has used FCVs, enabling consumers to experience the performance and benefits of the advanced clean technology. Cambodia Wildlife: Caught up in the Vietnam war, Cambodia forest suffered terribly. In a pocket of the old Ho Chi Minh Trail, there is today a very special peace and calm where the inhumanity of war and genocide once raged. It is an animal sanctuary, home to at least 42 threatened species including elephants, tigers, monkeys, leopards and bears. German Glacier: In Bavaria, at the Austrian border, is Germany’s tallest mountain, the Zugspitze. Here, despite extraordinary efforts to save it, Germany’s last glacier is dwindling. Every spring since 1991, ski resort workers have piled tonnes of loose snow on the glacier, and then covered it with giant anti-glare shields. This year because of the heat a 50% bigger tarpaulin went on a week earlier. UK Homes Of The Future: Giving us a peek into the future is the Sigma House, with many ecological features that could soon be standard in new British homes.
