In 1983, when German-born designer Karl Lagerfeld joined the house of Chanel, he changed the course of fashion history. To this day, the house is owned and controlled by the famously press-shy Alan Wertheimer, grandson of one of Coco's early partners. Despite initial criticism, Lagerfeld returned the Chanel label to the peak of high fashion. He produced endless, innovative variations on Chanel’s iconic signatures – continuing as Coco herself did, to hold up a mirror to our times. Before Lagerfeld, Chanel was a venerable name for society matrons. Since Lagerfeld, Chanel has become the status item for fashionistas around the world.

The house of Fendi looms large in the Italian fashion world. What started as a Roman fur and leather boutique in 1925 by Adele Fendi has blossomed into an international powerhouse. It has remained a family business, run by Adele’s five daughters. In 1965 Karl Lagerfeld took the design helm, steering Fendi towards mega success through innovations in fur, fabric, and technology. From the moment Lagerfeld linked two Fs, the Fendi logo became a status symbol. Fendi is still a family business of course, and Sylvia Fendi Venturini, Adele’s granddaughter, is responsible for the boom in accessories. In 1997, the baguette was the bag that launched a thousand trends. It's Lagerfeld and Fendi's casual approach to luxury that has helped the fashion house remain on top.
