Despite the locals' resistance they marry, and Jan returns to the drill platform, while Bess counts the days until he comes back home. She is sure that their love is blessed from above, especially because she is convinced that she can communicate with God on the mental level. When Jan is paralyzed after an accident, he fears that Bess will cut herself off from a normal life. When he is confined to the bed, he convinces her that he will recover quickly if she finds a lover and tells him about their sexual acts.

They and their mates appear as "idiots" when they go out, and they enjoy life together in Stoffer's uncle's large villa in Søllerød. They challenge each other and the community every day with their idiot-play. At the end of the film comes the ultimate challenge: they must dare to be idiots when they are with their loved ones.
