The American bombardment of Afghanistan and the subsequent overthrow of the Taliban left a power vacuum that the United Front (aka the Northern Alliance) were all too eager to fill. George Bush's Coalition Against Terrorism didn't have any better ideas, so their blood-stained misrule from 1992-96 - when warlords jostled for power and in-fighting left tens of thousands dead - was forgotten. Now they form a large part of a NATO-approved interim government. But in today's Kabul, the Kalashnikov rules. Violent crime is on the rise once again. Can the United Front's former warlords bury their differences for long enough to achieve democratic rule? Award-winning reporter Phil Rees sounds a note of caution.
