In "Soldier in Hawaii," the producers of the Army's six year old TV series examine the varied activities and responsibilities of a hard-hitting military force in Hawaii. Ground forces like the 25th "Tropic Lightning" Infantry Division have been pulled back to Hawaii from more forward areas in the Pacific to meet any sudden emergency and be airlifted to any trouble spot. In an interview with Governor Samuel King, the role of the National Guard in the defense picture of the islands is spelled out. As an illustration of the above, the filming of these Guardsmen on maneuvers, simulating combat conditions, is particularly exciting and adds much to this program.

Army Digest No. 5' brings a three-fold story to the television public: "Nike Hercules," "The Nike and The Torri," and "Hawaii - 50th State." For the first time THE BIG PICTURE shows the TV viewer the awesome destruction and power of one of America's latest defense weapons. The Nike-Hercules' fantastic accuracy is demonstrated graphically as it seeks, finds, and destroys the Army Corporal missile in flight. Many a veteran of the Pacific will welcome this episode's re-visit of Okinawa. The changes that have taken place on this important island include the replacement of our anti-aircraft sky sweeper weapons with modern missiles. As vulnerable as it is vital to our defense, Okinawa welcomes the protection it is receiving from the Nike installations on this keystone island in the Pacific. With the embracing of romantic Hawaii as the 50th State of the United States, THE BIG PICTURE takes another look at this newest addition. Long known for her carefree way of life, Hawaii has yet another distinctive characteristic--a mixture of many races and religions. Audiences will see how these separate cultures and ideals are woven into a tapestry that is distinctively Hawaiian. In her blue Pacific setting, she is truly an extension of the free soil of America.
