Dan’s father suffered from Schizophrenia, and since his father’s suicide, he now wonders whether he has the condition himself. Dan describes instances where his thoughts were jumbled together, and experiencing confusion, often coinciding with family and school issues. Dan says this confusion occurs when he’s under the influence of marijuana, but claims that it happens more frequently when he’s not under the influence. Based on his responses to the assessment, Dan does not experience symptoms such as a belief that people can read his mind or know what his thoughts are; he does not hear sounds that aren’t there, and does not believe that he can read other people’s minds. When alone, Dan sometimes feels like someone is out to get him, usually coinciding with "hitting the bong pretty hard" and consuming edible marijuana products. The feelings of paranoia do not persist, however, when Dan is not smoking. Dan’s father also had many of the symptoms which has made Dan fearful of his own risk for schizophrenia. Dan further describes a lack of friends, having feelings that he’s being judged, and that people think he’s "the crazy guy’s son." The two main issues that Dan is experiencing are primarily rooted in family trauma and his marijuana use.

Nicole describes several different traumatic experiences, some recent and some further in the past. Nicole was involved in a serious car accident; she was prescribed Oxycontin for her injuries. Today, Nicole refuses to revisit the street where the accident occurred and continues to have flashbacks triggered by sirens. In college, Nicole was sexually assaulted. Nicole describes the trauma of the sexual assault continuing after the incident when her two friends refused to believe her, taking the side of the perpetrator. Later, Nicole tried to report the sexual assault but found no support with authorities either saying she waited too long to report the crime or disbelieving her account. Nicole continues to have nightmares about the assault, still avoids going out alone in the evenings, and finds it hard to trust men. Nicole says she easily becomes on edge, especially when someone is right behind her. Nicole is often the victim of cat calling from men on the street, which causes her further anxiety.

When Brittany is questioned about her belief that her boyfriend Ian has cheated on her, Brittany becomes increasingly paranoid and agitated. Brittany is upset that she does not know what to say to confront Ian. Brittany’s friend Clara told her that Ian was cheating on her. In the past, Ian cheated on his prior girlfriend when he began dating Brittany. Brittany admits that she hasn’t taken her bipolar medication in two weeks, which coincides with her "knowing" that Ian is cheating on her. Brittany describes feeling numb and slow when she’s on the medication, and so she feels this is the reason why Ian is cheating on her. Since stopping her medications, Brittany feels like she is now who she really is.

Mr. Rice has come into the office today on crutches with his wrist injured possibly by a self-inflicted wound. He is carrying a bag of possessions on his lap. His behavior seems erratic and nervous as he describes inept doctors and a bizarre relationship he formed with a local fraternity in which he made his temporary residence. After an argument with the fraternity brothers, he now claims he will be moving in with a woman he just met at a bus stop. This training title highlights the major symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder. Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder may include: frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment; a pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterized by alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation; identity disturbance: markedly and persistently unstable self-image or sense of self; and impulsivity in at least two areas that are potentially self-damaging (e.g., promiscuous sex, eating disorders, binge eating, substance abuse, reckless driving); recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, threats or self-injuring behavior such as cutting, interfering with the healing of scars (excoriation) or picking at oneself, affective instability due to a marked reactivity of mood (e.g., intense episodic dysphoria, irritability or anxiety usually lasting a few hours and only rarely more than a few days); chronic feelings of emptiness; inappropriate anger or difficulty controlling anger (e.g., frequent displays of temper, constant anger, recurrent physical fights); transient, and stress-related paranoid ideation, delusions or severe dissociative symptoms.

Larry has always felt removed from his peers and co-workers, living on the fringe of the group. His boss moved him away from working with the customers who complained about Larry’s odd behavior. Lately, he claims to be experiencing some strange sensations, smelling odd odors and receiving telepathic messages from an old friend he recently learned passed away. This training title highlights the major symptoms of Schizotypal Personality Disorder. Symptoms of Schizotypal Personality Disorder may include: ideas of reference (excluding delusions of reference); odd beliefs or magical thinking that influences behaviors and is inconsistent with subcultural norms (e.g., superstitiousness, belief in clairvoyance, telepathy, or "sixth sense" in children and adolescents, bizarre fantasies or preoccupations); unusual perceptual experiences, including bodily illusions, odd thinking and speech (e.g., vague, circumstantial, metaphorical, overelaborate, or stereotyped); suspiciousness or paranoid ideation; inappropriate or constricted affect; behavior or appearance that is odd, eccentric, or peculiar; lack of close friends or confidants other than first-degree relatives; and excessive social anxiety that does not diminish with familiarity and tends to be associated with paranoid fears rather than negative judgments about self.
