Gene Ammons: Gentle Jug, Vol. 2

From the late '40s until his death in 1974, Gene Ammons was a stunning ballad player. The fact that Ammons had such an appealing tone certainly didn't hurt, but it was the tenor titan's warmth, soulfulness, and vulnerability that made his ballad playing so irresistible. Assembled in 1995, Gentle Jug, Vol. 2 is an excellent sequel to The Gene Ammons Story: Gentle Jug. While that CD contained material from his early '60s sessions Nice an' Cool and The Soulful Mood of Gene Ammons, this collection of ballads spans 1960-1971 and draws on ten different albums he recorded for Prestige. True to form, Ammons is expressive and moving on standards that range from "You Go to My Head" from 1962's Angel Eyes and "My Romance" from 1960's Boss Tenor to "Here's That Rainy Day" from 1969's The Boss Is Back (which was Ammons' first album after serving seven years in prison). Most of the selections are instrumental, although "If You Are but a Dream" (1962) boasts a pleasing vocal by Etta Jones. Neither Gentle Jug, Vol. 2 nor its predecessor are the last word on Ammons' ballad playing -- the Chicagoan made more than his share of memorable ballad statements in the late '40s and '50s. Nonetheless, anyone who is looking for a collection of smoky, romantic mood music can't go wrong with this fine CD. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

Anyone who has even the most basic knowledge of Gene "Jug" Ammons will tell you how marvelous a ballad player he was. When the tenor titan played ballads, there was nothing superficial going on -- Ammons dug deep and showed the world what soulful, smoky, ultra-expressive playing was all about. Assembled in 2000, Gentle Jug, Vol. 3 marked the third time that Fantasy put together a ballad-oriented collection by the saxophone master. For those who don't know anything about Ammons, three Gentle Jug collections might seem excessive, but it isn't. Spanning 1961-1970, Gentle Jug, Vol. 3 draws on Ammons' Prestige years and -- like the two previous Gentle Jug collections -- shows why his lyrical ballad playing was so revered. Whether he is interpreting "Blue Velvet," "The Masquerade Is Over" or Mel Tormé's "Born to Be Blue," this 61-minute, 11-song CD paints a consistently attractive picture of Jug's romantic side. His haunting 1960 performance of "Angel Eyes" is among the most captivating versions of that great, if overdone, standard -- and when Ammons pours his heart into "Lush Life," it is obvious that he has no problem relating to Billy Strayhorn's world-weary outlook. While some of these performances feature pianists, others find Jug leading organ combos. Surprisingly, Jug was not a big fan of organists; he complained that they "didn't know changes" -- nonetheless, he did some of his best (and most popular) work in their presence. Like the previous Gentle Jug collections, this hard bop/soul-jazz CD is well worth obtaining if you are searching for an album of smoky mood music. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

Hazel Scott's impressive bop piano was just one facet of talents that extended to playing classical music on the concert stage, singing and acting on-stage and onscreen, and hosting her own radio and television shows. A child prodigy, Scott entered Juilliard at the age of eight and made extensive concert tours of Europe, Africa, and the Near East before recording this date for Debut Records in 1955. For the set, she is accompanied by Debut's founders bassist Charles Mingus and drummer Max Roach. Given her talent and training, it's no surprise that Scott has technique to burn. Her energetic presence and personality and easy authority at the piano are amply demonstrated on the up-tempo numbers "The Jeep Is Jumpin'," "A Foggy Day," and "Mountain Greenery," and on the smouldering mid-tempo of Scott's "Git up From Here." The two ballad tracks are not quite so distinctive, although Scott's attractive performance of "Like Someone in Love" is elegantly detailed and nuanced. The alternate takes of "Git up From Here" and "Lament" are tentative compared to the main takes. Mingus and Roach are generally heard in supporting roles -- which they perform to perfection -- but they also get in some nice four- and eight-bar vignettes here and there. This music is also part of the Mingus boxed set The Complete Debut Recordings. ~ Jim Todd, All Music Guide
