Amanecer

Calderazzo strides effectively on "Midnight Voyage," puts plenty of emotion into Michael Brecker's "Sea Glass," and comes up with intriguing ideas throughout his "Toonay." Joey Calderazzo's Amanecer is mostly a solo piano recording. Calderazzo strides effectively on "Midnight Voyage," puts plenty of emotion into Michael Brecker's "Sea Glass," and comes up with intriguing ideas throughout his "Toonay." Claudia Acuña and guitarist Romero Lubambo guest on three selections apiece, both having a duet apiece with Calderazzo and making the group a trio on "Amanecer" and "Lara." Calderazzo, who is in consistently creative form throughout this superior effort, interacts well with Acuña on her mostly wordless vocals, romps on "I've Never Been in Love Before" and plays a thoughtful rendition of Bill Evans' "Waltz for Debby." Every selection on this well-conceived project has its purpose and is memorable in its own way. Highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

André Previn's ten records for Contemporary during 1957-1960 were among the finest jazz recordings of his career. Several of the albums were jazz interpretations of scores from Broadway shows although, ironically, the best-known one, My Fair Lady, came out under drummer Shelly Manne's name. André Previn's ten records for Contemporary during 1957-1960 were among the finest jazz recordings of his career. Several of the albums were jazz interpretations of scores from Broadway shows although, ironically, the best-known one, My Fair Lady, came out under drummer Shelly Manne's name. For this particular CD reissue, Previn, Manne, and bassist Red Mitchell perform eight songs from the Lerner & Loewe show {+Gigi}. Previn had won an Oscar for his adaptation of the score, so he knew this music quite well. Best known among the songs are "I Remember It Well" and "Thank Heaven for Little Girls," but the trio also uplifts and swings the other lesser-known tunes. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
