In a great overnight battle Merlin guides Ambrosius and Uthers' army to victory. Ambrosius is now King of All Britain. In the aftermath of battle he confides to Merlin that he would like to build a great monument - a tribute to himself and to all those who died in the Wars. But their victory has been saddened by the death of Ninianne. A new crisis is looming. The Saxons have now allied with a powerful Irish Prince, Giloman of Killare. Uther and Merlin travel to Killare where the Irish are routed. At Killare there is a ring of Standing Stones which superstitious men caution Merlin from entering. Despite this, Merlin enters the ring and, reluctantly guarded by Ralf, spends the night asleep on a great black altar stone. He knows that this stone must be carried to Britain, to the Giant's Dance (Stonehenge). The altar stone is slowly bought back to Britain; Merlin is grappling with the building the Giant's Dance when a messenger arrives to tell Merlin that his father has died in Winchester. Merlin vows that he will complete the Giant's Dance as Ambrosius' monument, and Ninianne's and more. He persists at his work. During the building Camlach attempts to murder him but is himself killed by a falling lintel. Uther is still contemptuous of Merlin and watches the rise of Stonehenge with indifference. this feeling is quashed by the final sequence of events: Merlin completes the Dance and, with a funeral of one thousand torches buries Ambrosius and Ninianne in its centre. A great vision is shown, a vision of Ambrosius in reunion with Ninianne, and of the young King Arthur, as yet unborn, who will be the greatest King that Britain will ever know.

Merlin has been sent to Britain by his father Ambrosius to lure Vortigen and his army South. Now Merlin has led Vortigern into the heart of a mountain to a great underground lake. He tells Vortigern that beneath the waters of the lake lies the answer to his troubles. Vortigern orders the lake to be drained. By trickery Merlin produces from the mud of the drained lake his Red Dragon brooch. He tells Vortigern that this is a deadly sign - it means that the Red Dragon rules in North Wales, overpowering the White Dragon of Vortigern. Panic stricken, Vortigern orders his army to retreat to the south. Events now move swiftly. Merlin with his gift of 'the sight' knows that his father Ambrosius has already landed in the south with his army. Merlin sends Ralf forward to contact Ambrosius, whilst he himself returns to Maridunum to visit his mother in the convent. There he finds her near to death. Vortigern takes up position by the water at Doward. Merlin, Ambrosius and Uther move swiftly through the valleys and confront him there. Uther's first attack is beaten back, so Merlin devises a new plan of attacking Vortigern by fire and water. His plan works - Vortigern's position is overcome and destroyed and Vortigern is killed. Ambrosius is now the King of All Britain.

Uther is about the whip him when Ambrosius, Uther's older brother, arrives. Ambrosius at once realises that Merlin is different - he carries with him the brooch of the red dragon, given to him by his mother, Ninianne, in Britain. Ambrosius recognises it. Merlin identifies Ambrosius as the warrior who slew the bull in his vision. Uther mocks all this, but Ambrosius has already realised that Merlin must be his son, the child of his romance with Ninianne many years ago. Merlin has the joy of discovering that he has found his father. The years pass, and the love grows between the, Meanwhile Ambrosius plans his invasion of Britain to regain his throne.
