This documentary provides an in-depth examination of protest activities surrounding the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. It documents draft resistance, the growth of G.I. coffee houses, the development of alternative media and the early days of Newsreel itself. It is particularly useful in its exploration of the problems the movement faced in using mainstream media to broadcast its message. It is also a document of the philosophies, tactics, and problems of the student movement in the crucial year of 1968. It is most useful when background information can also be provided.

WINDY CITY MOURNS AS FLAMES SWEEP FAMOUS RESORT
(98)
CHICAGO, Ill. -- Spontaneous combustion of a paint supply, on hand to give Riverview Park a new dress, results in a fire that razes most of the pleasure pavilions in the amusement center. The conflagration proves unmanageable for the private fire-fighting force. The rapid spread of the blaze threatens the entire place, and the city department is summoned to assist in controlling the fire. The racing roller coaster, encircling the entire grounds, is consumed, with other popular concessions, including the famous "Bug House" that provided gaiety for millions, as the licking flames mount 200 feet in the air. One of the capitals of hilarity crippled as the new season dawns.
PILGRIM HORDES JAM HISTORIC VILLAGE TO HONOR "BLACK VIRGIN"
(114)
LE PUY, France -- Thousands of devout Catholics journeying from all corners of the world retreat to this village to commemorate one of the rarest fetes in the history of the faith. Occurring only when Good Friday falls on the Feast of the Annunciation, the picturesque rite has happened only 24 times in 700 years and will not take place again until 2005. The feast marks the celebration of the presentation by the Pagan Egyptian Sultan to King Louis IX of his conception of the Blessed Mother. A rare event never before pictured on the screen.

Including a 17-ton Bourdon, one of the finest in the universe, the bells, frames and fittings weigh approximately 374,000 pounds. A 5-foot drum, electrically controlled, operating the console, is tested and approved, as the great multi-part instrument gets ready for its long voyage.

(118)
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Like a bolt from the blue, while 130 men toiled at double-time to bring the project to completion on schedule, a gas formation in the sub-basement set off a blast that rocked the whole city and wrecked the first floor of the 17-story structure. Scores of laborers, pinned under falling debris suffered injuries in the catastrophe in which the death toll mounted hourly. Ambulance surgeons and rescue squads administer to the stricken and comb the ruins for survivors, while state and local officials launch investigations into the underlying causes of the fatal explosion, under the personal supervision of Gov. White.
ANCIENT RITES MARK OPENING OF BIBLICAL FEAST OF PASSOVER
(82)
CHICAGO, Ill. -- Jews of the world greet the advent of the famous spring festival by participating in the Seder ritual, the family fete that marks the beginning of the 7-day sacred holiday. Commemorating the liberation of the Israelites from the oppression of the Egyptians, devoted millions trudge back to the natal fire-sides to sip sacramental wines and keep a rigid diet of matzos with their parents during the holy period. One of the most picturesque occasions of the year in the ancient religion that has endured nearly 6000 years.
BEGIN HEROIC TASK TO RECLAIM AGE-OLD MALARIAL MARSHES
(111)
ROME, Italy -- Premier Mussolini sets off the hundred explosions that start the mountainous job of rehabilitating the Pontine disease-infested swamps. Charges of dynamite loosen tree stumps on the 200,000-acre tract between this city and the Tyrrehenian Sea. And at a given signal hundreds of war veterans and farmers set to their task, in the reclamation of the vast area, which has been heretofore deemed impossible of salvaging. More than 100 tractors plow over the ground in the huge project, which Il Duce is determined to turn into fertile grain-growing land. Another feather in the cap of the indomitable Premier.

DIXIE MARBLE CHAMP SWEEPS FIELD TO WIN ALL-AMERICAN CROWN
(82)
OCEAN CITY, N. J. -- Brushing aside all competition, 13-year-old Harley Corum, the pride of Louisville, Ky., batters his way to the U.S. "miggles" title. The Blue Grass stalwart repeats his flashing victory of 1931 by disposing of a formidable list of opponents and in the final stanza defeats Earl Weisgerber of New Jersey, 5 to 1. His feat gains for him the U.S. laurels and, as an extra prize, the world's largest lollipop.

LEBANON, Ore. -- The Strawberry City of the Northwest makes its bow in an unusual manner to celebrate a bumper crop of the succulent fruit-let. The ton-and-a-half product feeds 6,048 sweet-toothed citizens and marks a new high in sizeable confections.
SHEEP ACT AS LAWN-MOWERS
(54)
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. -- The famous Greenbrier Airport solves a perplexing problem. The fast-growing grass proved a vexatious hindrance to the safety of arriving and departing planes, until someone was struck by a bright idea. Accordingly, a herd of sheep is imported and the woolly animals are repaid for their services by a guaranteed diet of their favorite herbage. An idea that kills two birds with one stone, so to speak -- and which, incidentally, is being copied by the Tempelhof Airdrome, in Berlin, according to latest despatches.
ROOSEVELT and GARNER
(552)
CHICAGO, Ill. -- Scenes of unparalleled frenzy feature the 24th Democratic Convention as it gallops down the home stretch.
After 3 ballots, in an all-night session, William G. McAdoo announces for California and Texas that the two states have decided to swing their votes to Roosevelt, starting a stampede for the New Yorker's band-wagon that finds all aboard but a few die-hards, irreconcilables for the cause of Al Smith.
The Convention is further aroused to heights of enthusiasm by the unanimous nomination of John N. Garner for the Vice-Presidency.
And to cap the climax, feverish excitement prevails when the delegates receive the startling news that Roosevelt is flying to Chicago, breaking all precedent by accepting the nomination at the convention itself.
The arrival of the Nominee arouses a storm of emotion among the great throng which had awaited his appearance for hours. Resting on the arm of his son, Roosevelt receives the acclamation of the Democracy and the announcement of his nomination by Senator Walsh, of Montana, Chairman of the Convention.
The acceptance speech sets forth the Candidate's stand on the platform in no uncertain terms and promises a fulfillment of Party pledges made in the Convention.
A historic pictorial document -- a faithful recording of one of the most important episodes in the history of the Democratic Party.

UNIVERSAL NEWSPAPER NEWSREEL VOLUME IV NUMBER 71
MOLLISON LEAVES ON WORLD'S FIRST 2-WAY TRANSATLANTIC HOP
MINEOLA, N. Y.--With the same informality and care-free with which he landed here last week after the first successful one-man air passage from east to west over the Atlantic, Captain James A. Mollison motors out to his small Puss Moth plane and casually hops off for the return trip. With his tooth-brush, a borrowed shirt and the same ten-shilling note he brought over with him, the daring Scot heads for home and his bride of a few weeks, as the first "aerial transoceanic commuter."
AMERICAN MERMAID VICTOR IN MARATHON SWIM CHAMPIONSHIPS
TORONTO, Ont., Canada--Again Margaret Ravior of Philadelphia shows her remarkable water prowess and wins the world's 10-mile title in the swimming classic held by the Canadian National Exposition. Showing her heels to the field in the gruelling distance contest, she finishes more than a quarter-of-a-mile ahead, while 50,000 spectators cheer her third consecutive "first" in this event. Mrs. Evelyn Armstrong of Detroit is second, May Looney of Warren, O., third, and Dorothy Nalevaiko of Glen Cove, L. I., fourth, with two Toronto girls in the remaining money places. The leading aquatic sports battle of the year in the land of the Maple Leaf.
PICCARD ASCENDS TO NEW HEIGHT MARK IN UPPER STRATOSPHERE
DUBENDORF, Switzerland--The amazing balloon trip of the Brussels professor and Max Cosyns, his young assistant, in their daring voyage into the blue to study the effects of the cosmic rays, is one of the scientific high-lights of the decade. Imprisoned in an all-metal globular nacelle or gondola, they cast off just before sun-up and ten minutes later are out of sight in the ether.
DESENZANO, Italy--After a twelve-hour trip 16,500 meters (more than ten miles) above the earth, they narrowly escape drifting out to sea, and finally land here near Lake Garda, with a new record in aerostatics to astound the world, and science waits, with bated breath, for the final results of the momentous ascent, now being laboriously and painstakingly calculated.
THE TIDE TURNS
National Industry continues its steady upward climb as thousands of employees go back to work
PART V
ELIZABETH, N. J.--A million pounds of metal in new machinery orders for the Hoover Dam and for Uncle Sam's new cruisers and Army dredges causes a speed-up in operations at one of the big Jersey machine manufacturing plants, and the addition of 100 employees to the payroll.
DETROIT, Mich.--8,000 men are put back to work by one of the leading automobile factories, turning out 2,000 cars a day as a result of the increasing demand. One of the encouraging signs in the new wave of business optimism.
KENTON, Ohio--A bumper onion crop in the Scioto Valley marshes makes work for 2,500 unemployed men, women and children at the peak of the harvesting season. 15,000 bushels (25 car-loads) a day are taken from the largest independently owned marsh in the world, 17,000 acres in extent.
CHICAGO, Ill.--The largest washing machine company gets back to a pre-war basis, increasing its personnel by 50 percent, and turning out a washing machine every 28 minutes, as the result of steadily increasing orders.
RECORD CROWD HAILS DARING SKY FEATS AT NATIONAL AIR RACES
CLEVELAND, Ohio--America's aerial aces put on their most spectacular show at the annual speed contest. Daredevil John Runger amazes the multitude by wing-walking on a looping, spinning plane. Ben Howard and Harold Neumann thrill the 25,000 spectators by dizzy pylon swooping in closed course events. Zooming squadrons of service ships from Selfridge Field and Quantico, Va., provide additional breath-taking moments. Foreign birdmen add their quota of spinechilling acrobatics, to say nothing of Al Wilson and his crazy pusher biplane. The cream of the aeronautical fraternity in the world's greatest aerial tournament.
HEAD-ON LOCOMOTIVE SMASHUP THRILLS 30,000 AT STATE FAIR SHOW
DES MOINES, Ia.--Two 112-ton passenger engines crash at 50 miles an hour to make a Roman holiday for the huge throng of excited spectators. Set with open throttles from the opposite ends of a 3,000-foot stretch of track, the two moguls tear into each other with all the fury of ancient gladiators. A breath-taking crunching of metal, a roar of escaping steam, a shower of white-hot sparks, and the two machines are reduced to complete wreckage. One of the most spectacular demonstrations ever staged in the mid-west.
