Featured playlist:  Clips for College: Societal and Cultural Impact of Darwin's Theory of Evolution by Jenna Makowski, Alexander Street Press

150 years after Darwin published his pivotal "Origin of the Species", the subsequent shifts in social, cultural and religious thought are still being absorbed. Anti-Darwinism schools of thought percolate mainstream society across the United States, Europe and the Middle East, often deeply rooted in historical opposition that moves beyond religion. Since its inception, evolutionary theory has been manipulated by groups in power to justify agendas of colonization, sterilization and control. The clips in this playlist explore the negative consequences of the theory of evolution, both intended and unintended.

Overview of Opposition to Darwin
directed by Soren Bruun; produced by Jacob Kofler, Danish Broadcasting Corporation (Copenhagen, Capital Region (Denmark): Danish Broadcasting Corporation, 2011), 53 mins
Despite 150-year-old scientific evidence proving Darwin's theory of evolution, opponents are strong, vocal and many. From Christians who argue that the theory of natural selection undermines the idea that humans are created in God's image to Muslims who argue that terrorists exploit natural selection to justify acts of terror, this documentary traces the historical roots of anti-Darwinism and its role in contemporary society in both Europe and America.

Who Opposes Darwinism in the United States
directed by Soren Bruun; produced by Jacob Kofler, Danish Broadcasting Corporation (Copenhagen, Capital Region (Denmark): Danish Broadcasting Corporation, 2011), 53 mins
According to a Gallup poll in 2008, only 14% of Americans claim to believe in Darwin's theories. Among the majority who don't are the Assemby of God, a denomination 2 million strong. One of the most compelling arguments against evolution for evangenlical Christians is that evolutionary theory is used by pro-life advocates to justify abortion.

Darwin's Roots in Fundamentalism and Evolving Religious Beliefs (The Violent Legacy of Charles Darwin)
directed by Soren Bruun; produced by Jacob Kofler, Danish Broadcasting Corporation (Copenhagen, Capital Region (Denmark): Danish Broadcasting Corporation, 2011), 53 mins
Darwin was raised in the English religious culture of the mid-1800s that ascribed to 6-day creation beliefs, and his only university degree was a theological one. His 5-year trip around the world, where he studied fossils and documented animal species, began to shake his beliefs. By the time he wrote "Origin of the Species", he viewed God as distant and uninvolved in human life. By the time he died, he was an atheist.

The Theory of Evolution Clashes with Western Culture (The Violent Legacy of Charles Darwin)
directed by Soren Bruun; produced by Jacob Kofler, Danish Broadcasting Corporation (Copenhagen, Capital Region (Denmark): Danish Broadcasting Corporation, 2011), 53 mins
One of the main reasons Darwin's theory of evolution clashed so strongly with conventional Western thought is because it undermines a core tenant of Christianity: that man is created in God's image. If we evolve from animals, that tenant is debunked.

Even though 80% of people in Denmark believe in evolution, there is a vocal minority led by people like Torben Sondergaard and Poul Hoffman, who promote the belief that Darwinism leads to evil and brutality while destroying key Christian values like charity.

Overview of Historical Exploitation of the Theory of Evolution (The Violent Legacy of Charles Darwin)
directed by Soren Bruun; produced by Jacob Kofler, Danish Broadcasting Corporation (Copenhagen, Capital Region (Denmark): Danish Broadcasting Corporation, 2011), 53 mins
Darwin's theory of evolution was the groundwork for the eugenics movement that swept Europe in the late 19th and early 20th century. The Swedes, Norwegians and Danes used the theory as the basis for colonizing and exploiting indigenous groups and gypsy communities in Northern Scandanavia and Greenland.

Evolutionary Theory Exploitation: The Skull Measuring Experiment (The Violent Legacy of Charles Darwin)
directed by Soren Bruun; produced by Jacob Kofler, Danish Broadcasting Corporation (Copenhagen, Capital Region (Denmark): Danish Broadcasting Corporation, 2011), 53 mins
One of the most aggressive exploitations of evolutionary theory came from anthropologist Soren Hensen who, wanting to prove that Greenland's eskimos were less biologically advanced than Europeans and thus needing "civilizing", undertook a skull measuring experiment. Skewing the results to match his ideologies, he "proved" that their skulls (and thus their brains) were smaller.

Evolutionary Theory and Racial Hygiene (The Violent Legacy of Charles Darwin)
directed by Soren Bruun; produced by Jacob Kofler, Danish Broadcasting Corporation (Copenhagen, Capital Region (Denmark): Danish Broadcasting Corporation, 2011), 53 mins
Another instance of the abusive manipulation of Darwin's theory of evolution for political gain occurred in Denmark in the 1920s. In an attempt to create a strong native "race" of Danes who wouldn't drain the newly created welfare state, sterilization procedures were implemented for the mentally and physically ill, homosexuals, and anyone who appeared "different". Preceding the genetic and ethnic "cleansing" practiced by the Nazis during WWII, institutionalized sterilization continued in Denmark until 1967. This part of history forms the foundation of the contemporary ant-Darwin movement in Denmark.

Whereas in much of Europe and Turkey anti-Darwinism is a grassroots movement led by a minority of the population, more than 80% of Americans don't ascribe to evolutionary theory. Creationism is advocated by politicians and educators alike.

Sweden is home to one of the largest anti-Darwin groups in Europe, which holds regular meetings. Their main arguement is that evolution gives people an excuse to kill people, and they link it to modern-day massacres such as school shootings in Finland.

According to historian and professor Joe Caine, most people who argue against evolution are associating certain things deemed negative with it when, in reality, there's no connection at all.

Government and the Theory of Evolution (The Violent Legacy of Charles Darwin)
directed by Soren Bruun; produced by Jacob Kofler, Danish Broadcasting Corporation (Copenhagen, Capital Region (Denmark): Danish Broadcasting Corporation, 2011), 53 mins
Though anti-Darwinism is a minority movement, its followers are growing. In the EU, warnings have been issued about certain websites from fundamentalist Christian right groups denouncing scientific proof of evolution. The biggest problem is that a rift between science and religion continues to grow, breeding extremism on both sides of the spectrum.
