Playlist:  Introduction to World Music: Europe by Jenna Makowski, Alexander Street Press

The goal of these playlists is to introduce students to various folk traditions across Europe with a focus on the music in its historical context as well as its transformation and place in contemporary settings, in particular revivals. Students should identify various folk genres with their place of origin as well as develop an understanding of how music has been used historically, and continues to be used, in the construction of national and ethnic identities.

Hungarian folk music and dance have been at the forefont of Hungarian national identity since the turn of the century, when classical composers like Bartok and Kodaly spent months in the rural countryside, recording and documenting folk songs, which had various functions from accompanying daily chores to weddings. Hungarian identity, and thus Hungarian music, has a complex history, where nationalism, ethnicity and Roma identity all come into play. There was a revival of Hungarian music and dance beginning in the 1970s, when urban dance houses became a center of socialization for young folks, and they continue today.

Klezmer, with roots in 19th century Ashkenazic wedding music in Eastern Europe, was initially brought to America by immigrant Jewish and Roma musicians at the turn of the century. It underwent a revival in the 1970s, when a new generation of musicians began building a contemporary repertoire based on turn-of-the-century recordings. Alongside it has developed a revival of Jewish identity and preservation of a music style that nearly vanished in Europe. The tracks in this playlist include turn-of-the-century recordings as well as songs from the more recent revival.
