One of the most well-known and internationally respected filmmakers in Sri Lanka, Lester James Peries’ career spans nearly seven decades and includes accolades such as Sri Lankabhimanya, the highest civil honor of Sri Lanka (2007) and a Fillini Gold Metal from Cannes International Film Festival, awarded by UNESCO for an outstanding film career. Likewise, his wife and fellow filmmaker Sumitra Peries won an award for the best film director in 50 years of Sri Lankan cinema. Here are seven of his features, including Gamperaliya (Changes in the Village), which won the Best Director and Best Film awards at the 1965 Sarasaviya Film Festival and went on to receive major publicity in France.
