Threats, murders and bloody attacks in the name of Islam - the phenomenon can be seen throughout the Islamic world. ISLAM IS THE SOLUTION is a film about the background to Islamic fundamentalism. It is set in Egypt, a country now confronted by a powerful fundamentalist movement. The film shows meetings, open discussions with fundamentalist leaders and followers, pictures of attacks and fundamentalists on trial. Death to all who desecrate Islam is the slogan of the fundamentalists. Hundreds of attacks by them on tourists, critical writers, reporters and policemen have stunned Egypt in recent years. Tourism has plummeted dramatically, while the critics of fundamentalism have been threatened and their homes are now heavily guarded. Abu Zayd sees no difference between moderate fundamentalists, who want to achieve an Islamic state through politics, and the radicals who use violence. Both in his view are guilty of terrorism.

With her camera, she fights to the police line, where she films people weeping and screaming as they are beaten. She interviews angry Egyptians demanding the end of the corrupt Murbarak regime. Neveen powerfully documents, first-hand perhaps for the first time, a revolution in progress, in high definition, and explores the different agendas of a rampant youth and a dying regime.

Thirty years ago, as the first Arab woman to speak out against female circumcision, Egyptian feminist Nawal El Sadaawi lost her job as Director of Public Health. In 1981, she was imprisoned for criticising Sadat's regime. Her name appeared on a fundamentalist death list and both she and her husband were forced into exile. Now, having voiced the common knowledge that the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, the Hajj, has pagan roots, she has been accused of insulting Islam. For this, she could be forcibly divorced from her husband and face a three-year prison term. We talk to 70-year-old Nawal about her life's struggle for the freedom to criticise Islam from within.

'Broken Promises' is the story of how American agents in Sweden in 2001 secretly deported two Egyptian men suspected of terrorism.
The men were arrested by Swedish police and brought to an airport where they were handed over to US agents. They were then drugged, had their clothes cut off and were flown off in the now infamous white plane to prison and torture in Egypt. These are the extreme measures the West has resorted to in the war on terror. This revelation of a shocking abuse of human rights has been corroborated by similar stories in other countries. In January 2006, it prompted the EU Parliament to launch a thorough investigation into the activities of the CIA in Europe. This is a new documentary, based on several shorter stories produced in 2004 and 2005 by TV4 Sweden’s current affairs programme. The award-winning investigative work by the team consisting of Fredrik Laurin, Joachim Dyfvermark and Sven Bergman, sparked a political uproar the world over, and strained relations between the US and the EU. “Broken Promises” is an important documentary of our time that raises the question of how far we can go in fighting terrorism.
