Abstract / Summary
Comparative Study of Legislation of American States with Respect to Women - Due to a mandate from the 1978 Nineteenth Assembly of the Inter-American Commission of Women (Comisión Interamericana de Mujeres (CIM)), an investigative center associated with the CIM studied legislation about women to analyze women’s equality with men before the law. This comparative study of legislation in American states focuses on four areas of women’s rights: political, civil, criminal, and labor. The section on political rights includes comparisons of women’s suffrage, nationality, citizenship, and right to hold office; the section on civil rights includes comparisons of women’s legal status after marriage and divorce; the section on criminal rights includes comparisons of abortion laws; the section on labor rights includes comparisons of restrictions on women’s labor and regulations of trades in which the majority of women worked. This comparison provides an extensive overview of women’s legal rights in the early 1980s.
