These diverse case studies make a compelling case for the importance of effective spiritual care in healthcare and provide unprecedented insight into the essential role of the chaplain within the healthcare team. Presented alongside critical reflections and responses from professionals within chaplaincy, psychology, psychiatry and nursing, they provide an honest and detailed look into how healthcare chaplains actually work with the people in their care and reveal the vital role of narrative and imagination in effective transformative practice. From a 16-year-old with a belief that God would enable a miraculous recovery from paralysis, to an African man with a history of psychosis and depression whose cultural belief in witches complicated his treatment, to a dying Jewish man, aggressive and isolated due to his traumatic life experiences, each case includes insight into the patient's needs and chaplain's perspectives, discussion of spiritual assessments and spiritual care interventions, and accounts of significant encounters and dialogues. The nine paediatric, psychiatric and palliative case studies and reflections in this ground-breaking book will enable chaplains to critically reflect on the spiritual care they provide and communicate their work more effectively, help healthcare professionals develop a clearer understanding of the care chaplains deliver, and provide an informed perspective for those who develop policy around spiritual care and need to make the case for chaplaincy services.

Exploring both principles and best practice of the spiritual care of sick children and young people, this remarkable and inspiring book equips the reader to think critically and creatively about how to provide care in hospitals, hospices and other care contexts for ill and disabled children.Written for staff from any allied health discipline, the authors explore the potential spiritual needs and issues faced by sick children and young people. They provide evidence-based practice principles, and a range of activity-based interactions that empower the child or young person and expand discussion of meaning and identity. The book includes stories and multidisciplinary practice examples, as well as many ideas; practical activities; discussion of work with families, and also of the various tensions and issues that can emerge.Based on evidence-based practice and research carried out by the Chaplaincy Team at Birmingham Children's Hospital, the book will be helpful and inspiring reading for chaplains, nurses, play and youth workers, therapists and anyone else involved in the care of sick children and young people.

This book explores culture, development, and spirituality from the perspective of social work. This framework serves as foundation and guides analytical deliberation through the use of case studies from around the world. With emerging trends in development, synchronistic synthesis between the inner self and interventions, it is anticipated to contribute to advancing well-being of all people. The book reflects global experiences from both the social work professions and development practitioner’s perspectives, as it pertains to economic and social development. The book serves as a guide to those who want to better understand and incorporate spirituality into successful social work interventions, practice, and research. It examines social development in the daily lives of children and families by looking at larger national and international phenomenon that can affect the well-being of communities. The book further discusses natural disasters, poverty, war, migration, human trafficking, war, violence and other factors with suggestions of innovative global interventions that have been utilized to assist diverse marginalized groups and communities.

Influential photographer Arnaud Maggs, turning 85, embarks on a series of self-portraits that wryly depict his life's work. Spring Hurlbut, at 60, is creating haunting works that evoke mortality while harboring the certainty that Arnaud's time is limited. Together more than 25 years, each grapples with the nature of an artist's creativity where the drive for invention and discovery resists life's finite reality.

This edited volume offers original scholarship on economic and social human rights from leading and new cutting-edge scholars in the fields of economics, law, political science, sociology, and anthropology. It analyzes the core economic and social rights and the crucial topic of nondiscrimination, and includes an innovative section on 'meta' rights. The main chapters answer important questions about economic and social rights performance around the world by emphasizing the obstacles that prevent governments from fulfilling their obligations. The interdisciplinary analysis offers a detailed and up-to-date discussion to help scholars and policy makers find the best ways to instantiate economic and social rights. The authors examine the role of the associated obligations, and especially the obstacles to respect, protect, and fulfill those obligations. The book's introductory and concluding chapters address conceptual issues and correct mistakes often made by critics of economic and social rights.

This film documents the recent work of Janet Adler, the noted movement therapist whose earlier work was profiled 20 years ago in the classic film, “Looking for Me.” Here she works with eight women through a practice called Authentic Movement. Authentic Movement is concerned with the relationship between moving and witnessing; it assumes complete trust in the body’s capacity to remember and to tell the truth. As the film progresses, the eight women engage in a deepening process of self-directed movement in the presence of a witness; then they learn to be witnesses themselves. Moving and witnessing take the women toward an integration of body and spirit, toward wholeness. “Still Looking” is essential viewing dance therapy and movement classes and will stimulate discussion in a wide variety of courses in psychology, therapy, dance, spirituality, and women’s studies. It was produced by Janet Adler.

The Street is a moving and intimate study of three homeless Montrealers, with a unique approach that is neither voyeuristic nor judgmental. Characters experience cycles of addiction and recovery, hope and despair, but rise above with a sense of dignity, humanity, and community. The film explores the social and economic complexities of homelessness without relying on mediated and damaging stereotypes. Through its emotional appeal, it works to transcend the statistical and emotional haze which surrounds most public commentary on the homeless. In doing so, it ultimately bridges the gap between compassion and action – between ‘us’ and ‘them’.By concentrating on just three individuals, the film makes the ‘homeless problem’ a personal one, allowing audiences to experience a more personal side of homelessness.

Addiction can break up families, and often does. This is the story of a daughter whose father, an addicted gambler, left the family when the children were young to pursue his addiction in Las Vegas. As a grown woman, Natalie goes to Las Vegas in search of her father, where she finds him homeless, gaunt, and unwashed, but still driven by the desire to gamble. Despite her best efforts, he is, at first, unwilling to acknowledge his addiction and accept the help he needs.
This is a chronicle of a daughter's struggle to get her father off the streets and back into society, and to be accepting of a less than perfect father, who still nonetheless is her one and only dad. Over time she ameliorates his condition, finding him shelter and social services. She also tries to help him conquer his addiction and seems to be partially successful. By the end of the film they have become father and daughter
An important film for courses in counseling, family relations and social work.
