New York State has the second highest level of bullying in the United States. Beyond Bullying tells the story of a New York City middle school student, a former high school student, and a high school drop out who help us make sense of the emotional and social complexities of why they bully. This important new work addresses the tensions and divisions in social work between conservative Christian religious beliefs and lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) students, practitioners, faculty members, and clients. Authors representing a diverse range of sexual orientation and religious and professional identities explore the debate regarding freedom of religious expression and full sexual orientation affirmation. Their discussions provide a deeper understanding of the complexity of topics such as social identity, oppression, power and privilege, human rights and social justice, attitudes and prejudice, and ethics and the law. The book also discusses multiple ways of resolving some of the conflicts, including intergroup dialogue and sociodrama. Models of Christian LGB affirmation and advocacy are presented, and recommendations for teaching, research, and practice are provided to move the field forward.

Drawing from the literature on international social work and the authors' extensive diverse experiences in this area, this book identifies and describes the necessary components of international placements to help programs not only maximize learning for the student, but also meet the requirements of the field curriculum and CSWE standards. It presents a well-developed process for dealing with critical issues that typically emerge when placing students abroad and factors that field programs should consider prior to committing resources for the establishment of international placements and student exchange programs. Sample forms and documents, ranging from model affiliation agreements with foreign universities to online seminar syllabi, are provided on a CD that accompanies the book.

Helping Foster Children In School explores the challenges that foster children face in schools and offers positive and practical guidance tailored to help the parents, teachers and social workers supporting them. Children in care often perform poorly at school both in terms of their behavior and their academic performance, with many failing to complete their education. They will have often experienced trauma or neglect which can result in a number of developmental delays. By looking at why children in foster care do not perform as well as their counterparts, John DeGarmo, who has fostered more than 40 children, provides easy-to-use strategies to target the problems commonly faced. He emphasizes the importance of an open dialogue between teacher, parent and social worker, to ensure that everyone is working jointly to achieve the best outcome for the child. An invaluable resource for foster parents, social workers and educators alike, this book encourages a unified response to ensure foster children are given the best chance to succeed at school.
