Here is a compassionate and intimate documentary about aging mothers who live with their adult daughters. The stories realistically portray the pain of loneliness, the ailments, and the difficult financial circumstances experienced by many single, widowed and divorced women who make up a large percentage of the aging population.
The film follows three pairs of mothers and daughters who have been brought together under one roof by reasons such as a father/husband's death, degenerative illness, loneliness, isolation, financial circumstances or cultural tradition. Gloria is caring for her widowed mother May, who is coping with the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Originally from Scotland, they return to their native country and encounter the extra burden of re-adjusting not only to shared living but to a 'new' environment.
Charmaine has opened her home to her mom Harrian. Harrian had been living with her son for 15 years, but for the sake of his own family, the son felt it best that Harrian move on... and out.
Pam voluntarily moved in with her daughter Liz to help out with the finances. Now, after 11 years of cohabitation, Pam yearns for her own freedom.
All the women find themselves in an emotional tug-of-war as they grapple with conflicting emotions, changing expectations, social adjustments and a sometimes ill-fated commitment to do what's best. Candid and insightful, the film focuses on the all-too recognizable family dramas brought on by role reversals as Mom now finds herself reliant on her adult child.
