In this moving documentary three women and one man recall emotionally the childhood sexual traumas that destroyed their youth. They speak candidly about the recovery process which released them from symptoms that had plagued their lives - lack of self esteem, depression, suicidal thoughts and disassociative behavior. Carole, a drama teacher, thought that allowing painful memories from childhood to surface would kill her. Instead, it helped her to like herself for the first time and to stand up for what she believes in. Alan at 12 was regularly molested by his scoutmaster. As an adult he could not sustain sexual relationships. Through therapy he was able to deal with the anger that had been suppressed. His faith helped him as well. Alicia, who was molested by many members of her large family, realizes that her recovery may have saved her children from similar abuse. A noted doctor/author Colin A. Ross talks about the multiple personality disorder that often afflicts incest survivors. Therapist Virginia Zeeb points out the courage necessary for all these individuals to persevere through treatment. However, the results are worth it. College Adult

The sexual abuse of children committed by women, most often mothers, is a rarely documented subject. In this film, six victims of maternal incest powerfully convey their nightmarish child hoods. "It is common that young children do not have the words to tell other people" says Michelle Elliott, psychologist and author of Female Sexual Abuse of Children. The abuse often begins in infancy when children do not understand what their mother is doing. They lose hope that anyone will stop it and cannot talk about it until decades later. Often, physical violence accompanies the sexual abuse. From the age of two for eleven years, Lucy was abused by her mother who tried to smother her with a pillow when she refused to submit. The mother began abusing Lucy's younger sister when Lucy reached thirteen. Paul could not share his memories of abuse and feelings of abandonment with anyone. His secret dragged him into depression, hallucinations and institutionalization. The psychologist Monique Tardif of the Institute Philippe Pinet in Montreal says many incestuous mothers were abused by their fathers and later treat their own children as rivals for their husbands' love. She believes sexual abuse by mothers is much more common than formerly believed. The trauma is very deep and the victims often suffer for the rest of their lives. Ironically, many victims continue to seek maternal love long after they have been in therapy and have articulated the awful truth. High School College Adult

THE HEALING YEARS Women Survivors Of Child Sexual Abuse Produced and directed byKathy Barbini for Big Voice Pictures This important documentary investigates the effect of incest on three women as it illuminates their journey from pain and despair to recovery to finally working to end the cycle of incest. The film features former Miss America Marilyn Derbur and her nationwide work as an advocate for victims rights. Also profiled is Janice Mirikitani, president of San Francisco's Glide Memorial Church, and her work with inner city addicts and alcoholics. She has found that 90 percent of women in recovery were abused as children. Barbara Hamilton is a 79-year-old survivor who has finally ended three generations of incest in her family. She describes growing up in a household where incest took place and how this gave rise to suicidal feelings in later years. It was therapy that enabled her to surmount her pain. These poignant stories are revealed through interviews, reminiscences with family members, scenes from counseling groups, and home movies. 52 min.
A companion film, Boys and Men Healing from Childhood Sexual Abuse, is also available from Filmakers Library.
