This powerful documentary follows two generations of the Santiago family of Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Twenty years ago at about the same time that "Cisco" and "Stingray" Santiago became leaders of the notorious Assassinaters gang, Sister Mary Paul and Sister Geraldine, started a unique social service agency called The Center for Family Life. These unusual nuns had the radical yet simple idea that they could strengthen this troubled community by supporting families like the Santiagos. Slowly, many gang leaders, like Stingray and Cisco Santiago, turned to the Center as an alternative to the streets. Twenty years later, Sister Geraldine is still working with the same Santiago family that terrorized the neighborhood two decades ago. The film opens with sixteen-year-old Luis and his gang breaking the law on the streets of Sunset Park. In rapid succession, Luis quits his job, drops out of school, gets his girlfriend pregnant, threatens his mother and step father with a knife, and is thrown out of his home. Luis’s fourteen-year-old sister, Elena, soon becomes pregnant, stops attending school and resorts to violence in the home and on the streets. Sister Geraldine intervenes in an effort to resolve the family crisis. We witness painful arguments and moving counseling sessions as this embattled family struggles to remain intact. Sister Geraldine’s selfless energy, in the face of terminal illness in her later years, ultimately enables this troubled family to overcome its differences and become a stronger, more loving family. This moving chronicle of one family coping with violence, teenage pregnancy, and school failure mirrors the struggles of families in embattled urban communities all over the country. College Adult

Arguments between couples are an important aspect of interpersonal relationships. They allow the airing of divergent views so that a compromise becomes possible and violence is avoided. Here is the first documentary to investigate real couples in actual arguments. To capture this with absolute spontaneity, the filmmakers had the couples call them whenever they were about to be embroiled in an argument. They would then go into separate rooms waiting for the documentary crew to arrive, when they would resume their argument. Five couples are shown. They argue about issues such as money, sex, alcohol and children. Differences of opinions are vented humorously, passionately and sometimes venomously. One sees that despite seemingly irresolvable conflicts, couples have positive feelings towards one another. Couples thus argue as a way to be understood. College Adult

A brutal beating when he refused to stop crying was the cause of his death. Eli's plight had not gone unnoticed. Over the years, it had been reported to Child Protective Services by his grandmother, his teacher, and the doctor who had treated his other injuries. Although Eli was removed from his family for a short period, he was returned because the mandate of the agency was to keep families together whenever possible. This tragedy has caused the state to re-examine its child-protective laws. College Adult

In this moving documentary three women and one man recall emotionally the childhood sexual traumas that destroyed their youth. They speak candidly about the recovery process which released them from symptoms that had plagued their lives - lack of self esteem, depression, suicidal thoughts and disassociative behavior. Carole, a drama teacher, thought that allowing painful memories from childhood to surface would kill her. Instead, it helped her to like herself for the first time and to stand up for what she believes in. Alan at 12 was regularly molested by his scoutmaster. As an adult he could not sustain sexual relationships. Through therapy he was able to deal with the anger that had been suppressed. His faith helped him as well. Alicia, who was molested by many members of her large family, realizes that her recovery may have saved her children from similar abuse. A noted doctor/author Colin A. Ross talks about the multiple personality disorder that often afflicts incest survivors. Therapist Virginia Zeeb points out the courage necessary for all these individuals to persevere through treatment. However, the results are worth it. College Adult

The sexual abuse of children committed by women, most often mothers, is a rarely documented subject. In this film, six victims of maternal incest powerfully convey their nightmarish child hoods. "It is common that young children do not have the words to tell other people" says Michelle Elliott, psychologist and author of Female Sexual Abuse of Children. The abuse often begins in infancy when children do not understand what their mother is doing. They lose hope that anyone will stop it and cannot talk about it until decades later. Often, physical violence accompanies the sexual abuse. From the age of two for eleven years, Lucy was abused by her mother who tried to smother her with a pillow when she refused to submit. The mother began abusing Lucy's younger sister when Lucy reached thirteen. Paul could not share his memories of abuse and feelings of abandonment with anyone. His secret dragged him into depression, hallucinations and institutionalization. The psychologist Monique Tardif of the Institute Philippe Pinet in Montreal says many incestuous mothers were abused by their fathers and later treat their own children as rivals for their husbands' love. She believes sexual abuse by mothers is much more common than formerly believed. The trauma is very deep and the victims often suffer for the rest of their lives. Ironically, many victims continue to seek maternal love long after they have been in therapy and have articulated the awful truth. High School College Adult

Through four portraits, A House Divided sheds light on the hidden tragedy of elder abuse. The abuse itself takes many forms, ranging from willful neglect to financial exploitation to physical attack. The families depicted come from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds. We see one loving niece who is pushed to the threshold of her patience by her aunt's increasingly difficult behavior and failing health. The younger woman finally recognizes her need for outside help to prevent an explosive situation. In another family a frail elderly couple is being financially exploited by their daughter and son-in-law. A painful court battle resolved the conflict. Still another situation involves an elderly Chinese immigrant in San Francisco who was deprived of his social security checks by his wife and adopted son until a community support network came to his assistance. A case of physical abuse by an alcoholic son is complicated by the mother's enduring love for her child. She is finally forced to turn to the judicial system for help. With great sensitivity, A House Divided portrays the emotional complexity of family relationships that can lead to abuse of the elderly. It shows the isolation and helplessness of the victims and the need for understanding and support by those who work with the elderly. College Adult

Sound and Fury takes viewers inside the seldom seen world of the deaf to witness a painful family struggle over a controversial medical technology called the cochlear implant. Some family members celebrate the implant as a long overdue cure for deafness while others fear it will destroy their language and way of life. Sound and Fury explores this seemingly irreconcilable conflict as it illuminates the ongoing struggle for identity among deaf people today. The Artinian family is at the epicenter of this conflict and their incredible story illustrates the tension and raw emotion on both sides of this highly charged fence. Two brothers, one deaf and one hearing, anguish over the difficult choices they face about how to raise their deaf children. They reach very different conclusions about the cochlear implant, and their decisions spark passionate responses from their hearing and deaf relatives.Out of the Artinian's extraordinary candor emerges a rare and intimate portrait of the deaf that forces viewers to re-examine their definitions of personal identity, disability, culture and community. In addition to raising questions about deaf culture that few people in the hearing world ever consider, Sound and Fury offers the embattled deaf community an opportunity to gain greater understanding, tolerance, and acceptance of personal choice. THE HEALING YEARS Women Survivors Of Child Sexual Abuse Produced and directed byKathy Barbini for Big Voice Pictures This important documentary investigates the effect of incest on three women as it illuminates their journey from pain and despair to recovery to finally working to end the cycle of incest. The film features former Miss America Marilyn Derbur and her nationwide work as an advocate for victims rights. Also profiled is Janice Mirikitani, president of San Francisco's Glide Memorial Church, and her work with inner city addicts and alcoholics. She has found that 90 percent of women in recovery were abused as children. Barbara Hamilton is a 79-year-old survivor who has finally ended three generations of incest in her family. She describes growing up in a household where incest took place and how this gave rise to suicidal feelings in later years. It was therapy that enabled her to surmount her pain. These poignant stories are revealed through interviews, reminiscences with family members, scenes from counseling groups, and home movies. 52 min.
