Typically drought affected areas such as the Horn of Africa are suffering severe drought bought on by seasonal changes, climate change, political troubles and population increases. Management of the world's fresh water supply will determine global political stability and economic development. Many countries will experience internal conflicts over rights to water. There is enough water for everyone in the world, however, the question is who should pay for it, how much it should cost, and who should receive it. For the first time in history, the majority of the world's population lives in cities, and supplying these cities with sufficient water will be a difficult task that has the potential to cause many social conflicts. This struggle for control of water has led to riots in many areas of the world including South Africa and Spain where water-rich regions hold power over water deficient regions. Disputes over water are also disputes between countries. This is taking place between the ten countries that share the Nile River Basin in Africa. In Asia, the fight over control of its large rivers is a struggle of life and death and will have enormous consequences for billions of people.

After an eight-hour, bone-shaking drive across rocky terrain to the point where vehicles can go no further, the team sets off in 43º heat on a three-day walk with a camel-train to Dallol. They are following the salt caravan route; up to 2,000 camels a day have been making this epic journey for 10,000 years, to bring salt from the Dallol mines to the markets. En route Mukul treats a camel-herder, who is suffering from kidney stones due to dehydration. A crew member suffers heat exhaustion. Dougal examines rocks and fault zones, and explains how the rift system is forming a new ocean. As night falls the team experience the firewind, which blows at 46º and from which there is no escape. When they reach the Dallol salt mines, Steve and Kate join the Afar in an attempt to raise a massive slab of salt. They quickly realise why this is one of the toughest jobs in the world. Meanwhile, Dougal and Richard are 113m below sea level by the world’s lowest sub-aerial volcano. The earth’s crust is extremely thin here, and the Dallol volcano is a mass of eerie yellow turrets, hissing gasses and pools of sulphuric acid. Dougal cannot get a pH reading as it is off the scale. Richard explains his personal mission to find extremophiles (undiscovered life forms). The team re-unites and sets off, this time in vehicles, to the village of Kusra Wad. All are wary: the Afar have a reputation for ferocity, and hostility towards strangers. But the team arrives to find a party has been thrown in their honour.
