Regretters gives heartfelt voice to two transgendered people who underwent sex change surgery to become women. Now, years later, they would like to return to their original, masculine selves. Through their experiences we learn how very complicated gender identity is; morphing from one gender to another is not accomplished solely by sexual reassignment surgery.Orlando and Mikael are Swedish, now in their sixties. Meeting for the first time, they face one another on a stage and engage in a spontaneous dialogue. Orlando, an androgynous dandy dressed in a red velvet suit, had one of the first sex change operations in Sweden in 1967. He tells of his eleven year marriage to a man who never suspected that his wife had not been born female. Mikael, dressed as a man, underwent the surgery in the 1990’s when he was fifty years old. He has tried to convince his doctors to change him back, as he feels desperately lost between genders, trapped inside a body that is not his. Regretters is frank without being sensational. Why would a girl swear to stay a virgin? What kind of tradition sanctions this form of self-denial? In a mountainous area of Albania, an ancestral code of laws -- observed to this day -- placed women in the bottom rank of society. It dictates that "a woman is a sack, made to endure." A woman cannot choose her husband, buy or sell property or express herself politically. For centuries, on a bride's wedding day, her father gave the groom two bullets, to be used to kill his daughter in case she misbehaved and dishonored the clan. But there is a loophole. The ancient laws allowed certain women known as "Sworn Virgins" to take an oath in front of their clan, announcing their intention to remain virgins. This fascinating film reports on several unusual Albanian women who dress, act, talk, drink, shoot and are respected as real men. It's not a matter of sexual orientation, and there's no surgery involved. The villagers in this area simply accept the fact that some women want to live like men because they like their freedom. They prefer to manage their own lives; they do not want to marry and have children. One such virgin, the oldest of six daughters, took over the running of the family when their parents died. Bachelor Farmer is an intimate look at how a few gay men negotiate the challenges of small-town living in rural Kendrick, Idaho, population 369. In a place so small, no one can be a stranger. Being openly gay there isn't easy, but part of day-to-day small town living is dealing with difficult but necessary relationships. The gay men and the one gay woman profiled talk about the delicate balance between being “out” but not so far out as to antagonize their neighbors. They participate in the usual small town rituals of barbeques, Fourth of July parades, church on Sunday, and above all tending to the land. It is the love of the land they farm that has drawn them to this town--some have roots that go back generations, while others have settled to be with their friends. The cinematography captures the idyllic beauty of the rural landscape making it easy to understand their attachment to this place. Each of the gay farmers has a story to tell of why and how they made Kendrick their home. As they blend in with the community, they find that even a commitment ceremony is reluctantly tolerated. The partners later reflect that now they are treated like just another old married couple living down the road with too many cats. In this examination of outsider status and the struggle to be accepted in one's community, Bachelor Farmer is a rich story of community in the most unlikely of places. College Adult

The issue of gay marriage has polarized the country. This even- handed film follows events in Massachusetts after the state supreme court ruled 4 to 3 in favor of allowing same sex marriage. It is at the same time a lesson in the turbulent political process as a compelling portrait of several responsible, loving, stable couples who yearn for recognition by the state and their community to validate their families. Central to the story are Ellen Wade and Maureen Brodoff, both attorneys, who met and fell in love twenty years ago in law school. They have a fifteen year-old daughter Kate who appears to thrive. Although they have a comfortable suburban life, they feel deeply that they have been deprived of marital status and are "second-class citizens" because they are not "man and wife." The film follows Ellen and Maureen through the filing of the original lawsuit to their historic wedding, supported along the way by gay and lesbian organizations. It also treats with respect the opposition, whose deeply held convictions mobilize them to political action. By examining the political, religious and psychological arguments involved in the heated gay marriage debate, the film demonstrates just how central our concept of marriage is to us as individuals and as members of society.
