Psychologists may consult with teachers to help reduce student behavioral issues, obtain data to assess whether a student has a learning disability or mental health disorder, or to assist in building or repairing rapport with the student and their parents. In this video, guest expert, Jon Lasser, PhD, discusses his approach to consulting in schools with a panel of mental health practitioners and students, then demonstrates consulting with a teacher who works with diverse students. The 6th grade teacher in the consultation seeks assistance from a school psychologist because one of her students does not respond to the teacher’s directives and does not conform to behavioral expectations. The teacher believes the student has a learning disability and should be removed from her class to receive special education.Watch as Dr. Lasser navigates the various issues presented during the consultation, identifies the need for more data before diagnosing the student, and explores the student’s cultural background. This session features a teacher portrayed by an actor on the basis of a composite of different cases.

Anna indicates a high degree of personal stress that is currently impacting her daily life. The main stressors in Anna’s life include homework, which she never has enough time to finish, and her college applications. When asked about relationships, she describes a series of closed doors: friends don’t interact with her because she complains too much about headaches; her dad is always busy or watching TV, and she can’t talk to her mother. Anna has been having trouble in school for about three and half years, but the last six months have been overwhelming. Anna has difficulty focusing but finds music to be soothing. She doesn’t take any drugs and doesn’t eat more then usual. Anna doesn’t have anyone she can talk to about her stress and none of the techniques she has tried to cope have worked.

Visibly anxious, high school teenager Anna starts off the interview divulging that she’s not happy and “Mondays are hard.” Anna currently has headaches and her stomach hurts and yet the school nurse doesn’t believe her because she frequently has these symptoms. At home, Anna is not getting enough sleep because of all the homework her teachers are giving her and she worries that she is falling further and further behind. Anna feels like her dyslexia is a problem for everyone. She claims she receives mediocre grades; the soccer coach gives her a hard time because she’s always late, and the teachers complain that they have to rearrange their schedules and give her extra time on her tests. Anna feels helpless because she’s not ready for college, barely able to keep up with high school, and she’s not even close to finishing her college applications that are due next week. In addition, Anna used to study with friends, but can’t anymore because they don’t like her complaining. Jason, her boyfriend, also broke up with her a couple of months ago because she wasn’t fun to be around. Anna is tired of seeing everyone else happy and listening to them brag about the colleges they’re applying to. She feels hopeless about her future.

Though school is difficult for Duncan, lately his parents have been pressuring him to improve his grades in order to get into the best colleges. Duncan also faces bullying at school and feels that the faculty sees him as a problem because of his dyslexia. These problems contribute to Duncan’s persistent anxious throughout the day. To cope with the stress, Duncan seeks out solitude, but cannot escape his intrusive thoughts. At night, Duncan gets at most an hour of sleep at a time because of nightmares, which prevent him from falling back asleep. Recently, Duncan fainted at cross-country practice and has been experiencing severe headaches. As Duncan progresses through high school, he feels like his learning disability has hindered his friendships, forcing him to study longer and with tutors and in turn keeping him from participating in activities with friends. Duncan feels like there is no one who understands his problem or with whom he can talk to about these issues.

As soon as high school senior Duncan sits down to talk, the visibly anxious teen regrets his decision to speak to the clinician and attempts to leave. After assurances from the clinician that he should stay and that this conversation is private, Duncan admits that everyone in his class has been posting negative messages about him online. The shaming posts all started with a girl from his study group, Megan, who commented that Duncan should share the answers that he gets from the Tutor Center because of his dyslexia. As a result, Duncan hasn’t slept all weekend, describes pain in his back and a bad headache. From further questioning, we learn that Duncan’s headaches and back pain appear to correlate around his having to take tests. Duncan is extremely frustrated with his schoolwork, unable to what he claims are simple tasks because letters and words all become jumbled in his head and he can’t keep math equations organized. He claims that the teachers at the school don’t care and that he’s seen generally as an idiot. This low self-esteem and poor self-perception has led Duncan to believe he’s not gong to college even though his parents have exceedingly high expectations for him. When asked about his parents, Duncan becomes more upset, saying that they always overreact and that he doesn’t want them to know of his difficulties.

While in high school, students, their parents, teachers and guidance counselors all tend to focus on the process of getting students into college. And while SAT prep, essay writing, and the college search process are important, what’s equally important is helping students prepare for the choices and decisions they will make while they are IN college. This video reviews important life skills and knowledge development including time management, conflict management, self-advocacy, personal safety, and drug and alcohol use – which are ALL as important as academic preparation in order to be successful in college.

She gives run-on answers as she describes "zoning out" in college classes, causing difficulty with coursework, and describes relationship difficulties with her boyfriend, who she thought was in love with her. She describes waking up well before her classes, but yet arrives late and cannot understand why. Six years ago, Susie's father diagnosed her as having depression and she began treatment with medication. Her parent's "condition" for her attending college was that she have her depression "in-check." She describes being overwhelmed with numerous stressors. Her primary coping mechanism for stress is listening to music but that creates issues with her boyfriend. She emphasizes that she does not have any role models or people who can help her deal with her stress.
