Vibraphonist Victor Feldman's 1959 recording, Latinsville, found the British expatriate exploring various Latin rhythms in a decidedly West Coast style. Featuring an all-star group that included such cool school luminaries as trumpeter Conte Candoli and Frank Rosolino, Feldman also brought in Latin music pros, including percussionists Willie Bobo and Mongo Santamaria, bassist Tony Reyes, and others. Selecting such popular songs of the day as "South of the Border," "Poinciana," and "Lady of Spain" -- most of which never originally specified a Latin-style treatment -- Feldman made explicit each song's implied Latin idiom. Although artists such as vibraphonist Cal Tjader and Dizzy Gillespie had been producing Afro-Cuban and Brazilian-inflected jazz for a few years, the cross pollination didn't really catch on until the '60s. Consequently, Latinsville, while in no way as influential as, say, Getz/Gilberto, is nonetheless a forgotten gem. [The 2003 Fantasy Jazz reissue of Latinsville includes five bonus tracks from the original sessions, two of which feature legendary bassist Scott LaFaro.] ~ Matt Collar, All Music Guide

Guitarist Barney Kessel recorded regularly for the Contemporary label during 1953-1961, one gem after another. In 1969 he returned to Lester Koenig's label for this lone effort, a quartet set with vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, bassist Chuck Domanico, and drummer Elvin Jones. The music is fairly free, particularly Kessel's four originals (which include "Blues, Up, Down & All Around" and "Two Note Samba"). Even Paul Simon's "The Sounds of Silence" and "This Guy's in Love With You" are turned into reasonably creative jazz by the all-star group. Although none of the musicians was associated exclusively with the avant-garde (Elvin Jones came the closest but never quite embraced free jazz), they show the influence of the explorations of the era, using aspects of the innovations as a logical way to stretch the jazz mainstream. Fascinating music. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

One of the rare jazz two-record sets that's actually a worthwhile expenditure of vinyl and time, 1975's Bahiana is one of Dizzy Gillespie's finest albums of the decade. In the '40s, Gillespie had been one of the first U.S. bandleaders to take an active interest in Latin jazz, but his interest in the music had been intermittent in the intervening decades; Bahiana (named for the Brazilian state of Bahia) was his first all-Brazilian album in over a decade. It's a goodie, though. By the mid-'70s, interest in the original wave of bossa nova had largely died out, replaced on the one side by the tropicalia movement and on the other by the fusiony disco-pop of Airto Moreira and Deodato. Bahiana's richly expansive tunes -- not one under seven and a half minutes, and even the three ten-plus minute entries deserving every second -- are built on pure carnival rhythms, like the percolating, self-explanatory "Samba." Guitarist Alexander Gafa contributes half of the eight tunes, but the highlights are Gillespie's own festive "Carnival" and the hypnotic "Olinga," which sounds like Antonio Carlos Jobim sitting in on rehearsals for Kind of Blue. Those wanting to explore Dizzy Gillespie's Latin side should start here. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

Though John Pisano made some albums as a co-leader with Billy Bean in the late '50s, Willie Ruff in 1970, and Joe Pass in 1991, until this release the overly modest guitarist had never appeared as a leader on a record date. One could almost say that he still hasn't, for this album contains a series of duets with six other guitarists. Be that as it may, Pisano at last gets a chance to display his melodically tasty, often hard-swinging post-bop-oriented licks on electric and acoustic guitars, easily the equal or better of any of his guests. The 1991 tracks are intricate duets with his late sparring partner, Pass; everything else was assembled from sessions held throughout the summer and fall of 1994. There are several fine Pisano originals -- "Berry Drive," "D'Joe" (where Pisano's guitar burns especially brightly), "Blue Note Samba," and "Blues for E.S.M." -- which remind listeners of this unsung composer's large contribution to the success of the Tijuana Brass during his tenure there. Pisano's fellow guitarists here are Pass, Dori Caymmi, Lee Ritenour, Ron Affif, Ted Greene, and Phil Upchurch -- and on "Maos de Afeto" Pisano plays all the guitars himself, with Caymmi on wordless vocals. ~ Richard S.
