California, USA. A Jail/firestation in Puerta la Cruz - an institution out of the ordinary. 120 inmates from the ages of 20 and 60 are detained in order to make sure there are enough professional firemen in the area. From July to august, when the fires are most dangerous in California, they work hard fulfilling the tasks no one on the force wants to do. They dig trenches; build firewalls under great heat, all for one dollar per hour. Sometimes volunteers, sometimes forced onto the program, the inmates are for the most part mothers, there to pay back their debt to society and help save 80 million dollars per year. In exchange they benefit from better detention conditions and a reduced sentence. One day of work is equal to two days sentence reduction!
