NEWS REVIEW of 1962
In 1962 world peace was threatened by the most critical period in history since the end of World War Two. Red puppet Castro and the Russians turned Cuba into an Island fortress and when U.S. planes spotted missile installations President Kennedy and the Western Allies stood firm. The Russians removed their planes and missiles in a retreat to Moscow.
The Wall of Shame in Berlin was one year old and despite Red efforts to reinforce the barrier East Berliners still escape to the West.
France was at peace for the first time since 1939 as the 7 1/2 year war ended in Algeria. Leftist Deputy Premier Ben Bella took over and immediately found himself faced with economic chaos.
India found the path to neutralism a hard one in a world torn by strife. Red China invaded the country and the ill-prepared people rallied behind Prime Minister Nehru.
Death came to one of the world's most extraordinary and beloved women - Eleanor Roosevelt. She made the role of First Lady a dynamic one as she walked with the great and humble.
Pope John XXIII made modern Church history as he called an Ecumenical Council and, despite an illness, he presided at its close.
Above all 1 9 6 2 was a year of spectacular space achievements. Colonel JOHN S. GLENN, JR., became the first American to orbit the earth and he was quickly followed by Scott Carpenter and Walter Schirra who made six orbits of the earth. With the successful flight to Venus of the Mariner satellite, the United States was pushing forward with its program to put a man on the moon..

UNIVERSAL NEWSREEL, SYNOPSIS, RELEASE 37-2
THE POPE'S HISTORIC PILGRIMAGE
A pilgrimage into history. Pope Paul Sixth travels from Rome to the Holy Land on his precedent-shattering trip. Even as he boards the plane he creates a series of historical firsts: the first Pope to fly, the first to leave Rome since 1809 and the first to visit the Holy Land in 2,000 years.
He is greeted in Jordan by King Hussein before proceeding to Jerusalem where he enters the city through the Damascus gate and retraces the footsteps of Christ along the Way of the Cross. Police are helpless before the crowds that crush to see and touch the Pontiff.
The Pope crosses into Israel and goes to Nazareth where Jesus spent much of His early life and then to the Sea of Galilee where St. Peter was signalled out by Christ to be the first of the Apostles - the Peter who first occupied the Throne that has come down to Pope Paul VI. Then the Pope met with Patriarch Athenagoras, leader of the Orthodox rite. Thus he ended his journey as he begun it - by again making history.
N.Y. BLAZE BLACKS OUR WATERFRONT
A roaring fire casts a dark blanket over mid-town Manhattan as a blaze engulfs a waterfront pier. Six fireboats and scores of fire engines fight the blaze for an hour before bringing it under control. The pier was due for demolition anyway, so the fire just rang down the curtain early on one of New York's landmarks.
WINTER OLYMPICS PREVIEW
Scores of nations are in the frenzy of last-minute preparations for the opening of the Winter Olympic games in Austria. Germany is picking her ski-jumping team in final tests at Oberstdorf and they jump as far as 252 feet. There will be thrills at the Olympics -- and that's not jumping at conclusions.

TRANSIT STRIKE COSTLY When the transit wheels grind to a stop in New York City it's world-wide news. Mayor John Lindsay sets an example for most New Yorkers when he leaves reporters dropping behind as he walks from his mid town hotel to City Hall. Not in decades has the Brooklyn Bridge across the East River been so crowded with pedestrians. Along with other river crossings it is jammed with workers from Brooklyn and Queens trudging to their jobs. Motor traffic, never a bargain in New York, is increased many-fold, but the paralyzing jams that were feared never materialized. Commuters from the suburbs were able to reach the city by train and then hoof it to their office. The most miserable day of them all came when it rained from dawn to dusk. From New England to the Gulf of Mexico, not a ship is being loaded as 60,000 dock workers go out on strike. Union officials are shocked at the action of the workers in rejecting the contract and they plan further appeals to the men to ratify the agreement. If the strike is prolonged it will have an ominous effect on the national economy.

Now, factories are working around the clock to turn out the banners that will fly proudly over a proud nation within a few weeks.
