During his air force career, he began to dress as a woman - first at home, and then in public. For the last five years before his operation, Benjy dressed as a woman full-time. However, Benjy was a family man. His wife Debbie, appears to have been totally supportive of his decision to have a sex change operation and become Bridget. Their three sons, however, a fourteen year old and twelve-year old identical twins, did not take easily to having their father become a tall blonde with stiletto heels and an almost comic sense of the female. Confused and angry, they start getting into trouble. The film finds no easy answers as it sets the freedom of individual choice against family well being. College Adult

While the AIDS epidemic is causing immeasurable personal tragedies, it also raises a host of difficult public issues that must be answered by society as a whole. What should be done to help people protect themselves from the virus? What measures should be taken to keep those already infected from spreading the virus to others? And what kind of a commitment should society make to care for those with the disease? This program gives voice to the many moral, legal, ethical and economic concerns that the epidemic raises. It presents a broad range of opinions on such issues as AIDS education in the schools, needle-exchange programs, mandatory testing, the rights of people with AIDS, condom advertising on television, and more. The magnitude of this epidemic is forcing people with deeply held beliefs on personal freedom to confront the conflict between their principles and their fear of AIDS. Adult College High School

Westerners have always been averse to the idea of arranged marriages, holding up the "love match" as the ideal. In this film, a young, divorced European explores attitudes among the educated Indian couples of her acquaintance, asking them how they met and married their spouses. What emerges is an engaging portrait of young marrieds who have striven for personal happiness within a social system which would seem to negate these considerations. In India marriages are a family matter; the best interests of the family often govern the arrangements. Romance is not usually a consideration, nor are the feelings of the couple. We are taken to a marriage bureau, where earnest parents look over the qualifications of potential mates for their children; education, caste, religion, profession, physical attributes all figure in the equation. Marriages can be used to improve the social standing of the family. A rich, but low caste father has found a high-borne groom of shady reputation for his daughter and showers him with jewels. The bride accepts her fate and sadly drives off with her new husband after an opulent wedding. In our society where so many marriages fail and so many young people find it challenging to find a suitable mate, a glimpse into another world is both fascinating and ironic. College Adult

These days, ambitious young women in China feel they have to Westernize their appearance through plastic surgery in order to get ahead. They undergo lengthy, painful, and expensive surgery and hospitalization, often financed by their parents who can ill afford it. To accomplish the "right look," they visit surgeons to have their legs lengthened, their eyes westernized and their breasts enlarged. Some of the women end up with terrible physical problems as a result. It is a startling fact that every week some 16,000 Chinese undergo face surgery. The film includes a beauty contest for "Miss Nip & Tuck," in which all the contestants are women who have had plastic surgery. Many of their families have spent their life savings to pay for this investment in their daughters. The winner's family paid over $3,000 (which represented 2 years' salary) for her various plastic surgeries. The surgeons are happy to accomodate this business when one operation to lengthen legs costs $10,500. When one compares the attitude in China towards women during the Cultural Revolution when they were discouraged from dressing in anything but Mao jackets, the phenomenon is a startling illustration of China's rapid push into modernity. How do women perceive themselves in mid-life? In this lively film, women aged forty to sixty share the thoughts and experiences that enrich this new stage of their lives. Reflecting a wide range of income levels, lifestyles, careers and experiences, they have in common the conviction that growth and change are always possible. Whether they chose to re-enter the work force, go back to school, begin a new romance, or develop neglected talents, their attitudes challenge the stereotype of the middle-aged woman. While not everyone passed through menopause with equal ease, they all feel a sense of freedom and the energy to explore new directions. This important film shows that mid-life an opportunity for growth. College Adult

THE CUTTING TRADITION
Female Circumcision in Africa Today
A film by Nancy Durell McKenna and John Howarth
Narrated by Meryl Streep
The Cutting Tradition focuses on the issue of female genital mutilation (FGM), a custom, which appears barbaric to the westernised eye but is still practiced in many African and some Middle-Eastern countries. Despite being illegal in many of the places where it is practiced, FGM continues to be administered to very young women, often even little girls. In the majority of cases it exposes them to medical and psychological problems from which they sometimes never recover. The reasons are rooted in religious, cultural and historical grounds; this film comprises a balanced and non-judgemental exploration into those factors.
Natives of Burkina Faso, Egypt, Djibouti and Ethiopia express their opinions both in support of and against FGM. Their authentic, undiluted statements highlight the difficulty of resolving an issue that is as deeply rooted in their cultures as it is shocking to us. Narrated by Meryl Streep, with footage of traditional wedding celebrations and a shocking scene which follows a young girl experiencing FGM, Streep's narration takes us through this journey in a delicate and non-judgemental way.

This beautifully photographed, revealing film about Egypt's women captures their separate and subordinate life under the Islamic code. Men and women speak about their traditions, expectations, and patterns of life. We meet articulate women who have had little schooling and whose lives are centered on childbearing and hard physical work. They acknowledge that their choices in life are limited. The Koran dictates behavior at every stage of life. Their husbands are selected by their fathers. Often, at puberty they are taken out of school. They unquestioningly accept circumcision, arranged marriages, huge families and polygamous husbands. Women after marriage are secluded and some may never set eyes on another man. By participating in this film, the women question for the first time some of the assumptions of their lives. College Adult
