Independent since 1960, Somalia has seen virtually constant political upheaval. Chaos still reigns in the capital, Mogadishu, and throughout Somalia. Some eighty percent of the nation is under the power of guerrillas and local warlords. Taking advantage of the chaos, Islamic fundamentalist groups such as al Qaeda frequently infiltrate. Suspected to be the main financial source for al Qaeda, all assets in the al Barakaat bank, the country’s main bank, were frozen and remittances from workers abroad to their families at home were stopped, which aggravated the confusion and deepened poverty in the nation. Finally, Somalia has become a target in the post-Afghanistan "war" against terrorism. College Adult

There are many women languish in jail for carrying drugs into the United States. While some of these women voluntarily trafficked in drugs, others were inadvertent carriers. Drug Mules exposes the plight of this latter group: poor, uneducated women who are victimized by both the drug dealers and the criminal justice system. In a typical situation, drugs are planted in the belongings of women without their knowledge. Other times women are coerced by threats of violence to themselves or their families. If apprehended by U.S. Customs, they are particularly vulnerable because they do not speak English well. Unable to raise bail, they may spend months in jail awaiting trial. These women face impossible choices. They can defend their innocence at trial and risk fifteen years to life imprisonment due to mandatory sentencing as specified by the Rockefeller Law. Or they can plead guilty to a crime they have not committed in exchange for significantly reduced sentences. Drug Mules shows that the law must be changed to distinguish between hardened druglords and the naive women they exploit. College Adult

For thousands of years hemp has been known and used globally. The fibers have been made into clothes, paper and rope. The seeds have been used for food and oil. The buds and resin have been used as both a medicine and a drug by the names of hash, marijuana, and cannabis. Since 1937, a war has been waged against the plant because of its drug properties. It was spearheaded by Harry Anslinger, who had been in charge of enforcing prohibition against alcohol. Later, as co-chair of the UN s Narcotic Control Commission, he was influential in banning cannabis worldwide. In recent years, voices against this prohibition have been raised. Professor Lester Grinspoon in the latest edition of his book, The Forbidden Medicine, lists 35 maladies and symptoms on which marijuana has a beneficial effect. We also hear from patients who have used marijuana successfully for glaucoma. Professor Lynn Zimmer's research contradicts the myth that marijuana can cause brain damage. One former hardline judge in Germany concluded after twelve years of experience in the courts, that regulation of marijuana was more effective than prohibition. Yet in America, the prohibition continues. Federal authorities vigorously search for crops, even in California where the electorate had voted to legalize its medicinal use. College Adult

WikiLeaks boss Julian Assange's ongoing expose of US foreign policy would not have been possible without the work of Private Bradley Manning, who is alleged to have handed over hundreds of thousands of secret US war files and diplomatic cables. Reporter Quentin McDermott tells the inside story of Bradley Manning and his daring intelligence heist.
Second only to Julian Assange, Bradley Manning is the most important figure in the WikiLeaks controversy. But, while all eyes are on Assange, Manning is wasting away in solitary confinement. David House is one of the few civilians allowed to visit him. He describes the young soldier's mental deterioration and his struggle to deal with long hours of confinement, "...the US Government is just trying to put immense pressure on him in order to get him to crack open."
The film includes interviews with Julian Assange, former military analyst Daniel Ellsberg, former WikiLeaks spokesperson Daniel Dmosceit-Berf, Manning supporter David House, hacker Adrian Lamo, and New York Times Washington Bureau Chief Dean Baquet.

The film examines the tremendous influence the communication company Google is having on the corporate world as well as on our entire culture. The number of businesses, large, small and start-ups, using Google's services has skyrocketed. The service Google has developed called Search Engine Marketing has enabled many companies to increase the power of their advertising and boost sales by marketing through Google. Several advertising executives explain why and how they alter their marketing plans, sometimes on a daily basis, in order to raise their rankings in the Google listings. If they are not placed within the first five entries in the Google Search listing, "they are dead." Those businesses using Google are raising their profits by designing better web sites and constantly looking for new ways to entice users to their sites. The film also takes us to Google's colorful corporate headquarters where several employees discuss the innovative programs they have come up with, such as Google Search, Google News, and Google Books which are digitalized and affiliated with libraries. Google's influence also extends to individuals pursuing their daily life needs. Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt, says, "Google was founded to organize the world's information." There are those who now question Google's reach, revealing too much information about our private lives to anyone who can access the web. College Adult

In the Line of Fire exposes the harsh reality of covering news from the Middle East. While people around the world follow the conflict from the comfort of their living rooms, the journalists taking the pictures are being attacked and even shot by Israeli soldiers while they are covering the West Bank. This is either gross negligence or intentional. This documentary follows two Reuters cameramen, Mazen Dana and Nael Shyoukhi, who live and work in the West Bank city of Hebron. They work alongside cameramen from other competing news agencies, but in the field they all watch each other's backs. Even though they attempt to stay on the sidelines, these journalists have all too often become the target of attacks. After years of being the object of violence themselves, the Hebron cameramen decided to compile a video archive of beatings, shootings and humiliation. For the first time this video archive is brought to light in this film. Since the recent Palestinian uprising began, a growing list of foreign journalists has made similar claims that they have been shot at despite being clearly identified as journalists. Israel's army has investigated only a handful of cases despite vigorous lobbying from The Committee to Protect Journalists, Reporters Sans Frontiers and the Foreign Press Association in Israel. This exclusive portrait is the first to portray North Korea's "Dear Leader" Kim Jong-il, with interviews of North and South Korean politicians, as well as close relatives and former employees who have fled the regime. The government is secretive and little is known about Jong-il. He managed to retain power after his father Kim Il- Sung's death in 1994. By 1997, North Korea had become one of the most isolated countries in the world, with an economy in shambles and frequent famines, causing the death of millions of his compatriots. Jong-il's regime has made North Korea a nuclear rogue state threatening the security of the world.Having grown up among the military and political operatives of his father's government, Jong-il was appointed his father's propaganda chief. By writing and directing films, ballets and operas glorifying his father and himself, he created a remarkable personality cult around his father. This he extended to encompass himself, thereby legitimizing the father-son political succession. He has a reputation as a vain and capricious playboy, having been married five times and has had many mistresses, some chosen from the "Pleasure Brigade" of young women used by his cronies and himself. He lives in great opulence, feasting on rare foods and drinking heavily.Kim Dae Jung, the former President of South Korea and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize recalls his visit to Kim Jong-il in 2001 when Jong- il told him he wished to improve relations with the U.S. His message was passed on to President G.W. Bush. Despite this, Bush demonized Jong-il, declaring North Korea to be part of an "axis of evil" in 2002. As a result, U.S. - North Korean relations have worsened considerably over the past six years. College Adult

"You can say you're sorry, you can apologize, but you can't give back the hours, the minutes, the months a family has been broken up." - Carma Said In post 9/11 America, civil liberties have been curtailed in the name of national security, and immigrants were separated from their families when laws changed quickly, and were enforced selectively. Before, there was an implicit understanding between the INS and immigrant communities that people who had applications pending to legalize their status could reside in the country until an application was approved. After 9/11, and for South Asians and Arabs, the rule changed. The Muslim community, today, is alone among the vast immigrant population to face such targeted enforcement. Out of Status follows four families whose lives were permanently altered. College Adult
