During his air force career, he began to dress as a woman - first at home, and then in public. For the last five years before his operation, Benjy dressed as a woman full-time. However, Benjy was a family man. His wife Debbie, appears to have been totally supportive of his decision to have a sex change operation and become Bridget. Their three sons, however, a fourteen year old and twelve-year old identical twins, did not take easily to having their father become a tall blonde with stiletto heels and an almost comic sense of the female. Confused and angry, they start getting into trouble. The film finds no easy answers as it sets the freedom of individual choice against family well being. College Adult

E=MC2. Who really understands what lies behind Albert Einstein's famous formula? This fascinating documentary follows the development of his scientific ideas with great cinematic style. Special effects and beautifully rendered dramatizations illustrate the important discoveries and events in Einstein's early years. Einstein's early fascination with electromagnetism started when he was bedridden with an illness and his father gave him a compass to while away the hours. The magnetic needle stimulated his curiosity about the hidden order that lies behind the surface of various phenomena. By high school he had read the works of the leading physicists of his time. It was not an easy period, however. He excelled at the subjects in which he was interested. In the others, he couldn't be bothered. He dropped out of school for a while, to his parent's dismay, already proving he was going to take his own path. The Polytechnicum in Zurich accepted him despite the lack of a high school degree. Here the doors of the scientific world opened to him and he was finally in his right milieu. It was in 1905, at the age of twenty six, that his doctoral dissertation on the nature of light revolutionized scientific thought. In the film, Dr. Claude Cohen Tannoudji, Nobel Prize for Physics 1997, explains how Einstein developed a unique intellectual approach to problem solving in science. He was able to use his imagination to conduct experiments in his mind that couldn't be conducted in the physical world because they went beyond the technical capacities of the time. This intellectual process helped him to formulate The Special Theory of Relativity about the relationship of time and space. Trying to find the link between energy and light, he overturned the prevailing theories of the most eminent scientists of his time. The documentary deftly combines an appreciation of Einstein's scientific accomplishments, his trials and tribulations in gaining recognition, and his relationships both personal and professional. A rich portrait of a 20th century giant. College Adult

Independent since 1960, Somalia has seen virtually constant political upheaval. Chaos still reigns in the capital, Mogadishu, and throughout Somalia. Some eighty percent of the nation is under the power of guerrillas and local warlords. Taking advantage of the chaos, Islamic fundamentalist groups such as al Qaeda frequently infiltrate. Suspected to be the main financial source for al Qaeda, all assets in the al Barakaat bank, the country’s main bank, were frozen and remittances from workers abroad to their families at home were stopped, which aggravated the confusion and deepened poverty in the nation. Finally, Somalia has become a target in the post-Afghanistan "war" against terrorism. College Adult

While the AIDS epidemic is causing immeasurable personal tragedies, it also raises a host of difficult public issues that must be answered by society as a whole. What should be done to help people protect themselves from the virus? What measures should be taken to keep those already infected from spreading the virus to others? And what kind of a commitment should society make to care for those with the disease? This program gives voice to the many moral, legal, ethical and economic concerns that the epidemic raises. It presents a broad range of opinions on such issues as AIDS education in the schools, needle-exchange programs, mandatory testing, the rights of people with AIDS, condom advertising on television, and more. The magnitude of this epidemic is forcing people with deeply held beliefs on personal freedom to confront the conflict between their principles and their fear of AIDS. Adult College High School

Tran Van Lam had the ill-fated destiny to be foreign minister of South Vietnam during the devastating war with the North. He was a patriot, committed to seeing his country emerge from its colonial history. He was also the father of nine children, who with his wife formed a seemingly privileged family, which dined together, had vacations at the beach, learned musical instruments, and were instilled with their Vietnamese identity. As the war intensified, he and his wife made provisions for the children to leave the country. The nine children were dispersed to Australia, France, the U.S. and Scotland. The hope was that they would be educated abroad and bring their talents back to their native country. That was not to be. Tran VanLam was betrayed by the United States, his ally against the North. While he was a delegate to the Paris peace talks, Henry Kissinger secretly arranged the pull out with the North. Fortunate to be airlifted out at the fall of Saigon, he and his wife finally emigrated to Australia with one small bag, where they ultimately opened a coffee shop. The adult children, now in mid -career with families of their own, speak poignantly about their experience of dislocation. They each longed to be re-united as a family and had to struggle to forge a new identity in a foreign land. They were all deeply affected by their father's expectations to become accomplished and"give back." Each one feels "multicultural." All Points of the Compass is at once a gripping portrait of the "immigrant experience" and a new perspective on the American role in the Vietnam War . High School College Adult

Psychiatrist Dr. Edward Mason, produced this sensitive film on bereavement. It shows four children aged three to eleven, who lost a family member through death. Skillfully interviewed by a pediatrician or a psychologist, the children reveal their fantasies, their fears and their grief. Angels Don't Have Headlights shows how the child's conception of death and the child's grieving process differ from those of an adult, and in fact, vary considerably with each developmental stage. It presents a model for clinician-child-family interaction where the professional has the opportunity to foster the emotional health of the young person. Of particular value is that the children are from diverse backgrounds and all are articulate. A unique training tool for mental health professionals and medical personnel studying and working with children. College Adult

The three vibrant people profiled in this film will challenge anyone's preconceptions of old age. They all live independently in Angelus Plaza, a retirement home in downtown Los Angeles. They display a sense of humor, vitality, and interest in life despite the usual physical complaints of old age. Billie, an African American in her 80's has not lost her vanity or sense of fun. With a twinkle in her eye, she shows us her wardrobe, an outfit for every occasion including a walk to the corner for milk. She can be flashy on occasion, and prides herself on her attention getting spiked heels. One can't help but delight in her spirited regalia. Sandra, also in her 80's is learning Chinese, a feat that persons half her age would find daunting. She goes dancing every week, despite the scarcity of male partners. Miguel, a Cuban exile, tells us with a sly smile that he will not die before seeing Castro dead. He passionately holds on to his counterrevolutionary past. The filmmaker tells us she made the film having been deeply affected by the loneliness of her grandfather's aging and death. Through these three elders, she learned the later years can be gratifying. Westerners have always been averse to the idea of arranged marriages, holding up the "love match" as the ideal. In this film, a young, divorced European explores attitudes among the educated Indian couples of her acquaintance, asking them how they met and married their spouses. What emerges is an engaging portrait of young marrieds who have striven for personal happiness within a social system which would seem to negate these considerations. In India marriages are a family matter; the best interests of the family often govern the arrangements. Romance is not usually a consideration, nor are the feelings of the couple. We are taken to a marriage bureau, where earnest parents look over the qualifications of potential mates for their children; education, caste, religion, profession, physical attributes all figure in the equation. Marriages can be used to improve the social standing of the family. A rich, but low caste father has found a high-borne groom of shady reputation for his daughter and showers him with jewels. The bride accepts her fate and sadly drives off with her new husband after an opulent wedding. In our society where so many marriages fail and so many young people find it challenging to find a suitable mate, a glimpse into another world is both fascinating and ironic. College Adult

The slaves of the Caribbean contributed not only to the wealth of their masters, but also to the cultural heritage of the British Empire. For, as this film shows, such landmark institutions as the National Gallery, the Tate Gallery, and the British Museum were all funded by money made from the slave trade. Documented in fascinating detail through letters, paintings and poetry, the eighteenth century is shown to be both an age of high culture and an age of cruelty. The word "patron" had the dual meaning of owner of slaves and supporter of the arts. The film shows how the art of the period romanticized the servitude of the plantation blacks. As Hogarth's prints show, black domestics would be exquisitely attired to reflect the riches of their masters. Again and again we see in works of art that the black servants were depicted as a precious, exotic ornament, even as they were brutalized in real life. College Adult
