Skillfully interviewed by a pediatrician or a psychologist, the children reveal their fantasies, their fears and their grief. Angels Don't Have Headlights shows how the child's conception of death and the child's grieving process differ from those of an adult, and in fact, vary considerably with each developmental stage. It presents a model for clinician-child-family interaction where the professional has the opportunity to foster the emotional health of the young person. Of particular value is that the children are from diverse backgrounds and all are articulate. A unique training tool for mental health professionals and medical personnel studying and working with children. College Adult

The three vibrant people profiled in this film will challenge anyone's preconceptions of old age. They all live independently in Angelus Plaza, a retirement home in downtown Los Angeles. They display a sense of humor, vitality, and interest in life despite the usual physical complaints of old age. Billie, an African American in her 80's has not lost her vanity or sense of fun. With a twinkle in her eye, she shows us her wardrobe, an outfit for every occasion including a walk to the corner for milk. She can be flashy on occasion, and prides herself on her attention getting spiked heels. One can't help but delight in her spirited regalia. Sandra, also in her 80's is learning Chinese, a feat that persons half her age would find daunting. She goes dancing every week, despite the scarcity of male partners. Miguel, a Cuban exile, tells us with a sly smile that he will not die before seeing Castro dead. He passionately holds on to his counterrevolutionary past. The filmmaker tells us she made the film having been deeply affected by the loneliness of her grandfather's aging and death. Through these three elders, she learned the later years can be gratifying. When the Supreme Court decreed that mental patients able to live safely in freedom could not be kept in institutions against their will, it was hailed as a humane step forward. They were to return to their communities and receive supportive care. But that support never came through. The patients ended up in back streets all over America. This report follows some of these mental patients. We learn that profitable adult homes have sprung up which are often inadequate and resented by the community. Sometimes former patients are housed in nursing homes converted to locked psychiatric centers. Some communities resort to locking up the mentally ill in jail. Others leave them to wander the streets. There are also examples of successful community treatment programs. It takes money, staff and care, but we see that it can be done. College Adult

This is a story of a family where paranoid schizophrenia took its heavy toll, but also gave it the courage to forgive and to enlighten others about mental illness. In 1994, Matthew McBride, the youngest son of a suburban St., Louis family was fighting a difficult battle with paranoid schizophrenia. Imaginary voices convinced him that if he killed his parents, he could prevent World War III. He stabbed his parents to death hours after release from a mental hospital. Matt's brother and sister were left to deal with not only the violent death of their beloved parents but the well being of their younger brother who was not responsible for his actions. Matt was placed in a maximum security wing of Fulton State Hospital under the care of psychologist Dr. Elaine Larson. He battled psychosis, depression, and suicidal impulses. Through it all, he knew he had the support of his siblings and his doctor. After seven years, he progressed to a medium security facility. Mark McBride, his brother, co-produced this film and has become an advocate for the mentally ill. The family tragedy tested the depths of their humanity. They rose to the challenge. The filmmaker is available to speak with the film. College Adult

With the U.S. struggling to control soaring health care costs and 37 million Americans not covered by health insurance, the Canadian system of national health insurance looks attractive. This documentary takes a close look at how health care is delivered on both sides of the border. The film begins by comparing prenatal care in both countries. A San Diego woman who has insurance through Medicaid called sixty obstetricians and could not find one who would care for her. In Vancouver, a high-risk obstetric patient faces no financial barriers in having a closely monitored pregnancy. While routine medical care is more accessible in Canada, there are often waiting lists for elective surgery. Canadian patients with coronary artery disease often cross the border for surgery in the U.S. The last section examines the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In British Columbia mammograms are covered by insurance and there is a population screening program which may reduce breast cancer mortality by as much as a third. Yet high technology diagnostic procedures are much more available in the U.S., and Canadian patients may be subjected to older, more dangerous diagnostic tests. To complement the powerful patient stories, health care experts and business leaders like Lee Iococca comment on the medical and financial implications of both systems. College Adult

In Bejing stands the only hospital in China to specialize in allowing people approaching the end of their lives to die with dignity. It was established ten years ago by Dr. Li Wei, who had been a barefoot doctor in the countryside during the Cultural Revolution. He saw much hardship during those years and vowed to help some of those people who survived. Compared to a Western hospital, this is a simple, basic facility. Care and respect permeates the atmosphere. Each of the elderly patients embodies the history of his or her generation. Entwined with their stories is film footage illustrating the turbulent times through which they lived. By focusing on the stories of a few people nearing the end of life, The Chinese Hospice lends a personal face to history. College Adult

The first, Marge, the Blamer, shows an 85-year-old woman accusing her beautician of deliberately ruining her hair. By using the validation method, the beautician does not argue. Instead, she elicits Marge's thoughts and memories through a series of questions. Validated, Marge calms down. In the second vignette, Muriel the Wanderer, an 86-year-old woman searches the streets for her lost three-year-old daughter. Neither the police nor Muriel's son can convince her that her daughter is now a grown woman, and that the incident took place years ago. The son learns to listen with empathy, reducing his mother's anxieties. In clear "before" and "after" scenes, this video offers techniques that will help reduce burnout for caregivers and alleviate stress for the old person. This extraordinary undercover report from China exposes the suffering of thousands of Chinese whose lives have been destroyed by nuclear testing. It presents exclusive evidence from inside China of spiraling levels of cancer and birth deformities among the population of Xinjiang province - part of the Great Silk Road - which was opened to tourists in 1985. Up until 1996, China had carried out extensive nuclear tests in the Zinjiang province, which is in the northwest corner of China, bordering Kazakhstan. But Xinjiang is not unpopulated and isolated, as was Bikini Atoll. The filmmakers interviewed both victims and the doctors who are struggling to cope with their medical problems in the region's hospitals. The documentary reveals that the tests were carried out under highly dangerous conditions, which could have consequences beyond China's borders. High School Adult

This powerful film examines the intellectual attraction of suicide to a vulnerable teen and the catastrophic impact on his family. Campbell Bolton came from a high achieving, middle class family and had no background of drug abuse, violence or psychiatric illness. He was funny, charismatic and extremely intelligent. He ran away from home and was not heard from for 16 days before committing suicide. Shortly before, Campbell’s grades had fallen dramatically. Prof. Graham Martin, a suicide prevention expert, feels this caused a major blow to his self esteem. He was also troubled by his sexuality. Campbell knew he was gay and had come out to his friends; however he had not told his family. When he learned that his brother Angus found out, he was deeply distressed. Campbell’s family will never recover from the shock and loss. The whole community grieved. The principal of his school was very concerned about “copycat” deaths so Campbell’s father gave a talk at school. Campbell’s mother says, “Everyone is shocked but then the conversation stops. That’s why it’s so important to highlight what happens.” Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people. High School Adult

Dying is a personal, profound and poignant memoir of three people and how they faced their deaths. When it was first broadcast twenty years ago it was universally acclaimed. Unavailable for several years, Filmakers Library is proud to re-release this classic cinema verité documentary. The film focuses on three people with terminal cancer. Sally, a 46-year-old with brain cancer, comes home to her mother's house to die. In a rare study of shared grief, the elderly mother and the dying daughter are connected by the daily tasks of caretaking. The middle story is about Bill, dying in his early 30's, and his wife, Harriet. Bill is stoic but his wife rages against her fate of being left alone with their two growing children. The third is the story of Reverend Bryant, a thin black preacher whose unassuming manner shows his courage as his life slides to an end. On learning he has no chance of a cure, he preaches a sermon on dying, returns south with his family for one last look around, and at the end, with grandchildren playing at his bedside, dies with dignity. Filmed over a two year period, the film shows how each human being lives and dies as an individual, with deep personal needs and attitudes. It will sensitize health care professionals and counselors to the human factors that mitigate the anguish of both the patients and those who care for them. Also on the same DVD is Cortile Cascino, the award-winning feature-length documentary on Sicily by Michael Roemer and Robert Young. College Adult
