These days, ambitious young women in China feel they have to Westernize their appearance through plastic surgery in order to get ahead. They undergo lengthy, painful, and expensive surgery and hospitalization, often financed by their parents who can ill afford it. To accomplish the "right look," they visit surgeons to have their legs lengthened, their eyes westernized and their breasts enlarged. Some of the women end up with terrible physical problems as a result. It is a startling fact that every week some 16,000 Chinese undergo face surgery. The film includes a beauty contest for "Miss Nip & Tuck," in which all the contestants are women who have had plastic surgery. Many of their families have spent their life savings to pay for this investment in their daughters. The winner's family paid over $3,000 (which represented 2 years' salary) for her various plastic surgeries. The surgeons are happy to accomodate this business when one operation to lengthen legs costs $10,500. When one compares the attitude in China towards women during the Cultural Revolution when they were discouraged from dressing in anything but Mao jackets, the phenomenon is a startling illustration of China's rapid push into modernity. Behind Closed Doors is an in-depth examination of domestic violence from a very personal perspective. It focuses on David, an abuser, and Margaret, a victim, who each discuss their difficult childhoods, their low self esteem, their feelings of shame, and their determination to break the patterns of violence that have governed their lives. David was so severely abused by his father that he was hospitalized. Removed from his family, he entered a group home only to be subject to more violent behavior. As he tells his story, psychologists explain how such experience affects subsequent behavior. When he finally lived on his own, he briefly turned to crime and habitually abused women. Eventually marrying, his violent behavior continued until he almost killed his wife. Upon arrest, he was obliged to take an "anger management program." It was this program that helped rehabilitate him to the point where he could marry again and lead a normal family life. Margaret's story is also one of childhood trauma, and an abusive marriage which almost killed her. A battered woman's program and counselling helped her to escape and learn to live on her own. The scars are very deep, but she is able to enjoy a life free from fear. College Adult

How do women perceive themselves in mid-life? In this lively film, women aged forty to sixty share the thoughts and experiences that enrich this new stage of their lives. Reflecting a wide range of income levels, lifestyles, careers and experiences, they have in common the conviction that growth and change are always possible. Whether they chose to re-enter the work force, go back to school, begin a new romance, or develop neglected talents, their attitudes challenge the stereotype of the middle-aged woman. While not everyone passed through menopause with equal ease, they all feel a sense of freedom and the energy to explore new directions. This important film shows that mid-life an opportunity for growth. College Adult

Have you ever seen Muslim-American high school girls in full-length dresses and traditional hijabs (head scarves) playing full-court basketball? Prior to 9/11, the average Westerner had little more than one-dimensional views of Islam and Muslim women. Covered Girls opens a window into the lives of a colorful and startling group of Muslim-American teenage girls in New York and challenges the stereotypes many Americans may have about this culture. The film documents the daily experience of Kiren who coaches her high school basketball team, Amnah who has a black belt in Karate, and Tavasha who is cutting a CD of original rap songs. Their traditional clothing allows them to understand prejudices and to speak out about their faith, especially after 9/11, when people spat upon, pushed and threatened them. They are quite happy that their dress allows men to look at them as people instead of as sex objects. The film follows the girls from a Harlem recording studio to a Brooklyn mosque, revealing typical teenagers suddenly caught in a tug-of-war between religious extremism and the American dream. This documentary on gang rape and acquaintance rape is a compelling view of what is happening on college campuses. According to the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape, up to 80% of all rapes are acquaintance rapes, yet victims of rapes by strangers are ten times more likely to report their attack to police. Dating Rites includes an interview with gang-rape survivor Meg Davis, who tells how the attack still affects her life, even eight years later. We also hear from a convicted rapist, who gives compelling and disturbing insights into the psyche of the perpetrator. Included in the program is an eight minute re-enactment illustrating how a gang rape develops. The viewer will see, through the perspective of both men and women, how a party can turn into a tragedy. The documentary also calls upon professionals: rape crisis counselors, psychologists, and sociologists. Dr. Peter Germano, who runs a sexual treatment group at the state correctional institute, declares: "the college student who commits rape on campus, if not caught, will more than likely continue this behavior and rape again and again." This beautifully photographed, revealing film about Egypt's women captures their separate and subordinate life under the Islamic code. Men and women speak about their traditions, expectations, and patterns of life. We meet articulate women who have had little schooling and whose lives are centered on childbearing and hard physical work. They acknowledge that their choices in life are limited. The Koran dictates behavior at every stage of life. Their husbands are selected by their fathers. Often, at puberty they are taken out of school. They unquestioningly accept circumcision, arranged marriages, huge families and polygamous husbands. Women after marriage are secluded and some may never set eyes on another man. By participating in this film, the women question for the first time some of the assumptions of their lives. College Adult
