Mangale is a humble fisherman in the remote village of Pandav Nagar in southern Nepal. He’s a member of the Bote people, a small ethnic group of traditional fishermen probably no more than 8,000 strong. Since 1973 Mangale and the Bote have been denied access to the rivers and land which usually provided their livelihood and food, though it’s much more than that – the area has great spiritual significance to the Bote who regard the land and water as sacred. Instead the area was turned into one of Nepal's most famous tourist attractions, the Chitwan National Park. The Nepalese authorities try to keep the Bote out. Army patrols police the area and every time Mangale attempts to go fishing, he risks being caught. Even when he does get away with it, there is no guarantee the fish will bite. Often he returns home empty handed.

Esther Bokawurkin is a real survivor. She lives in a remote village in southern Nigeria and it’s not just that she has 12 children, but when she was younger she was infected by the parasitic worm that causes river blindness. She was one of the lucky ones and made a full recovery but many of her friends and neighbours did not and they went blind. Survivor’s Guide tells Esther’s story and, because there is such a shortage of qualified doctors and nurses, she is helping by becoming a health volunteer trained to dispense drugs. Volunteers like Esther are starting to make a real difference to the health of people in isolated communities where there is virtually no access to proper healthcare.

This is the extraordinary story of the struggle for survival among dairy farmers in Latin America. Javier Aguayo has a small herd of cows in Guayas, a lowland area of Ecuador. He is up at the crack of dawn on his horse rounding up his animals for milking. It's a tough life. The hours are long, transport is a problem, his customers often want their deliveries very early and often a lot of milk is left over. All he can do with this is make cheese, which he has to sell cheaply; Javier often makes a loss. But a new business scheme is starting to change his fortunes. Working with one of the country's biggest dairies, he takes his milk to a central collection point - part of the journey is by canoe along the river. Now he gets a guaranteed income and his business is starting to flourish. A Cowboy's Story explains how this new initiative is transforming the lives of farmers like Javier.

There are an estimated 170,000 Somalis living in the Dabaab refugee camp in northeast Kenya. Life in the camp is tough but one new – and surprising – initiative is starting to make quite an impact. Sport in the camp is important. It keeps the youngsters healthy and occupied amid the monotony. But very few girls were involved, partly because the mainly Muslim refugees were opposed to girls playing games. But that is changing now that special sports clothing has been designed for the girls which meets religious requirements. They wear an hijab to cover their hair and a long-sleeved tunic and loose ankle-length trousers. This video reports on life in the camp and how many of the girls have now taken to volleyball, netball and handball. This video is part of a documentary series produced for the BBC.

Malaria is primarily a disease of the young and of the poor, many of them children who live in remote areas with no easy access to health services. Most malarial deaths in Africa are among children. Nearly 3,000 die each day. But the use of simple prevention and control methods has shown startling results. Trials conducted in The Gambia, Burkina Faso, Kenya and Ghana, the use of bed nets treated with biodegradable pyrethroid insecticide have proved to be highly effective in protecting sleeping children from malarial mosquitoes. The results have been dramatic. In children under five the number of deaths in some of these areas has been reduced by a quarter. In Ethiopia Fatumo knows all about Malaria, having lost two children to it. Following her heartbreaking story of how this deadly disease has affected her, we learn how these new bednets can save future children and families in Africa.
