JOHNSON GREETS VETERANS

BOB HOPE ENTERTAINS TROOPS
For the 25th year in a row, Bob Hope brings his annual Christmas Show to troops in the field. At Camranh Bay, South Vietnam, he jokes, dances, sings, brings on pretty girls in a two-hour revue which has the GI's screaming for more.
NEW HOMES FOR REFUGEES
Some 11 hundred villagers are moved from one community to modern apartments in the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong. The exodus is necessary since a man-made reservoir, sorely needed to boost fresh water, will soon cover their homes with a lake.
LONDON WIG CLINIC
Europe's first wig-clinic, in London, is a huge success. The false top-mops are cut, styled, dyed, shaped, shorn, and returned to the wearer with an entire "new look." The transformation is startling and so is the towering style, but not a strand's out of place.

KENNEDY OUTLINES PLANS FOR YEAR:
President Kennedy addresses a joint session of Congress in a State of the Union message. He asks for the power to cut taxes in case of a recession and to lower tariff walls. He says his Administration will continue to fight for medical care for the aged and urged a plan to attack adult illiteracy.
100 DIE IN NETHERLANDS TRAIN WRECK:
With visibility poor in a dense fog, an express roared through a red signal at 75 miles an hour and plowed into a slower commuter train. With the 100 who died are scores seriously injured.
BOMBER SETS 11 DISTANCE MARKS:
A B-52 Bomber of the Strategic Air Command lands at Madrid after a non-stop, non-refuel flight from Okinawa to prove the capability of the plane. A 12,500 mile flight in 22 hours!
Fashion Parade
There's a breath of Spring wafting across New York despite the sub-freezing temperatures and this is the reason WHY: Easter fashions (in this case, hats!) that are as Spring-like as dogwood.
WINTER FURY: ---STORMS WHIP ACROSS U.S.A.....
From the Rockies to Tennessee, from the Great Lakes to Texas, the nation is one great ice box as temperatures plummeted and snow fell in some areas for the first time in decades. Memphis, Dallas and Denver are three key points in this record of how the nation fared in the face of nature's deep freeze...........

VIET NAM
"Operation Cedar Falls," biggest allied effensive in Vietnam so far, continues to blast its way through the "Iron Triangle," a Vietcong stronghold dating back to the French Indo-China war. Enemy installations are located, supplies and documents captured, and the hideouts demolished.
BLIZZARD
Ten deaths are counted as winter aims its worst blow at the midwest, packing blizzards and freezing temperatures. Traffic is clogged, schools closed, cities virtually brought to a standstill. Cold warnings continued on the heels of the storms, winter's most severe so far.
STARVING WHALES
A herd of white whales are ice-bound in the waters of Eskimo Lakes in Canada's Northwest Territory. Holes are cut in the ice to allow the mammals to breathe air and fish are fed to them. The government is searching for a new feeding ground and a way to lead them to it.
FLORENCE FASHIONS
Italian designers show their new lines for Spring and Summer in the White Ballroom of the Pitti Palace in Florence, Italy. Among the highlights: shifts by Lydia with a softer silhouette, knit outfits by Ilaria in a riot of colors and patterns and formal gowns by Valdetivera.
MONTE CARLO RALLY
The world-famous Monte Carlo auto rally gets underway from eight different cities in Europe. 195 starters comprise the smallest field since World War II. Good weather and road conditions produce some excellent timing at the beginning, but Monte Carlo is a long way.
BLOWHOLE
At Sydney, Australia, Kiama Blowhole provides plenty of thrills among divers and tourists, alike. It's a 25-foot cliff carved out by a crashing sea. Divers leap into its churning pool, are dragged some 20 feet below the surface, then struggle back to the rocks.
CASSIUS CLAY
Caly is in heavy training in Houston, for his title defense, February Sixth, against Ernie Terrell. The champion's draft board has said he could be drafted in February, two appeals having already been turned down. Experts say Terell should be Clay's toughest opponent to date.
FREE FALL
The British Royal Air Force Parachute Team performs a mid-air, hand-holding "link up," thousands of feet over North Africa. The scenes are shot by a fellow parachuter whose camera is mounted on his crash helmet. It looks like "ring-around-the-Rosie" between earth and sky.

UNIVERSAL NEWSREEL SYNOPSIS RELEASE 40-8
VIET COPTERS
Army helicopters, the rail northerners in the jungle warfare in Vietnam, are used for a variety of combat and non-military use. The 120th Aviation Company, "The Deans," demonstrates aerial photography...troop transport, and combat support missions by "choppers."
NEW HELICOPTER
A new rigid-rotor helicopter is at Palm Springs, California. Unlike other "choppers," it can roll, loop, fly upside down. Its designers state it could even outmaneuver a fighter plane in a dogfight. Its stability makes it a perfect airborne gun or rocket platform.
NORTHWEST WEATHER
Floods, mudslides, power failures...all accompany torrential rains and gale-force winds in the Pacific Northwest. The Pudget Sound area was hard hit. Downtown Seattle reported wide flooding where two and one-half inches of rain fell in one 24-hour period.
MACAO
Threat of Communist Chinese invasion drives Portugese civilians out of Macao, seeking santuary in Hong Kong. Alleged Nationalist spies and worker disputes are at the root of the trouble but the mass exodus is seen as a possible prelude to a Communist takeover in Macao.
AUTOMAT GOURMETS
The Confrerie de la Chaine des Rotisseurs, one of the oldest gourmet societies in the world, holds a gala dinner at the New York Automat. The reason? To prove that food, not atmosphere, is the important thing. On the menu: oysters, caviar, filet of beef, and quail.
FASHIONS
New summer fashions are previewed in both London and Rome. They include "the bouben," a summer dress of African prints with that nation's language on the hem. Fontana shows a "hideaway" beach tent, underneath which a lady can cargo her suit, and a "monoskate" outfit, with embroidered pants.
ERNIE TERRELL
Challenger Ernie Terrell works out in training for his upcoming heavyweight championship fight with titleholder Cassius Clay. He won an argument over unequal poster billing by threatening to walk out on the bout. Meanwhile, Clay still could be drafted, he's I-A.
OTTER
At Shubenacadie Wildlife Park near Halifax, Nova Scotia, kids enjoy some sixty acres of animals in their natural habitat. Among the stars is "Lottie," a 1-year-old American River Otter. She tussles with dogs, and takes her daily walk, run, swim...and snow slide!
