RECORD STORM: UNITED STATES and EUROPE HIT BY BLIZZARDS:
The New Year roared in with a storm voice that was heard around the world. North America as well as Europe was subject to record-breaking cold waves and snow. Bangor, Maine, was blanketed under 36 inches. In Europe, the palm trees in Barcelona, Spain, were snow covered. Britain, Ireland and Northern Europe suffered more severely.

UNIVERSAL NEWSREEL, SYNOPSIS, RELEASE 37-4
RIOTS SHAKE PANAMA
Long-simmering resentments erupt among the students in Panama as they voice their protest over U.S. policies in the Canal Zone. The trouble began when a group of American high school pupils flew an American flag without the Panamanian flag by its side. Native students stormed the school and before the rioters were brought under control more than a score were dead, including four U.S. soldiers. Panama suspended relations with the U.S. while an inter-American Committee acts to resolve the difficulties.
BLIZZARD HITS WIDE AREA
The worst blizzard of the season spreads from the Midwest to the Atlantic seaboard. Again, nature puts the brakes on the wheels of progress as automobile traffic slows and stops, airlines are grounded and trains run hours behind time. Oh well, Sprint is only about two months away. ONLY???
FIRST LADY'S TOUR
Mrs. Lyndon Johnson assumes her duties as First Lady with a visit to one of the nation's distressed areas - the coal mining region of Scranton and Wilkes - Barre, Pa. She attends the dedication of a science center designed to train unemployed men in new skills that will attract modern industries to the area.
BOSTON MEET OPENS TRACK SEASON
The Knights of Columbus meet in Boston brings together some of the best, including former pole -vault record holder, John Uelses; high-jumper John Thomas and 1000-yard king Bill Crowthers. It's a card of thrills as many meet and Boston records fall in this curtain raiser of the indoor season.

DOCK WORKERS STRIKE:
From New England to the Gulf of Mexico, not a ship is being loaded as 60,000 dock workers go out on strike. Union officials are shocked at the action of the workers in rejecting the contract and they plan further appeals to the men to ratify the agreement. If the strike is prolonged it will have an ominous effect on the national economy.
STORMS SWEEP NATION:
The nation is undergoing the ordeal of a buffeting from winter storms. First there were the rains, snows and floods that caused devastation in the Pacific Northwest. Now, from Maine to Tennessee there's a blanket of snow covering fourteen states.
CANADA'S NEW FLAG:
It's truly "The Maple Leaf Forever" as Canada officially adopts a national emblem. There never has been an official flag - the one flown with the cornered Union Jack was never really adopted. Now, factories are working around the clock to turn out the banners that will fly proudly over a proud nation within a few weeks.

EUROPE'S BEST COMPETE IN SKI JUMP:
The Austrian Championships bring out the elite of European ski jumpers and they find the slopes lightning fast after the temperature drops. TOP man on the scene is Bjoern Wirkola of Norway, who makes a leap of better than 338 feet.
OLD MAN WINTER IS OVER THE BARREL:
Speaking of jumping....they hold, the annual World's Barrel Jumping Contest at Grossingers, New York....and there's a new record set. For the first time the winner clears seventeen barrels, one more than the previous mark.
