Of all cultural groups in the United States, Asian-Americas are the least likely to seek professional counseling services. Even if the resistance to seeking professional help is overcome, they are the group with the highest rate of terminating counseling after a single visit. Our guest lecturer, Vivian Chee, suggests that failure on the part of counselors to understand the Asian-American culture and to tailor counseling approaches to fit the client’s cultural perspectives and values play a significant role in the underutilization of services. After reviewing value differences between Asian-American and European-American cultures, Ms. Chee addresses the differences between traditional therapy and the therapeutic approaches that are most effective with Asian-American clients. A role play at the end of the class provides a dramatic demonstration of the differences between these two approaches.
