"Anais Nin, filmed at the point in her life when she was passing from being a bohemian writer to being a widely read figure taken up by a new generation, reads selections from volume one of her just (1966) published Diary. This diary eventually went into many volumes and through its brutal honesty made her something of a cult figure on college campuses and in the new "women's liberation" movement. Many photos from her personal collection illustrate her life and world. The key passages read here deal with her childhood, her decision to keep a diary as a never-ending letter to her absent father, Europe in the 1930's, Henry Miller and his friends, and her fascination for the Surrealist movement and for psychoanalysis. 1966."

"Exploration of the remarkable career of composer Elizabeth Swados, with performance examples. She is interviewed by theater critic Margaret Croyden. Swados as artist, and participant in some of the most unusual theater projects of the decade. With the cast members from "Runaways": Leonard Brown, Jossie De Guzman, Karen Evans, Anthony Imperato, Diane Lane, Jon Matthews, Evan Miranda, Nan-Lynn Nelson, David Schechter, Paul Kreppel. Musicians: Judith Fleisher, John Schimmel, David Sawyer. Singer: Michelle Collison. 1978.Topics discussed include: Andrei Serban's inventive theater piece "Medea", working with Serban, Sylvia Plath's poems, which Swados set to music. Swados explains how she works, Peter Brook as her "mentor" and her African experience with his group. Her restless exploration of how much the human voice can convey, beyond literal meaning. "Ancient sounds" that can bridge all cultures. "Making theater go beyond the statement." Her youthful anger and how she expressed it. How she can orchestrate anything, even "car horn sounds in the street." She talks at length about the origins of her work "Runaways," her motivations for creating that work, how she developed the idea and took it to Joseph Papp, and his reaction to its early stages.Performance excerpts include: Swados singing in a "bird language", an excerpt from the Serban-directed Greek trilogy that utilizes an artificial language based on Greek and animal sounds, Plath poems set to Swados music: "Daddy" sung by Michelle Collison, with Swados on guitar, and "Applicant. "There's No Going Back if You're Going with Me" and other songs and scenes from "Runaways" (described as a collage work about the anger and pain of unwanted children.) Also the piece "Dear Friend" from a planned evening at The Public Theater about writers. Also her song setting of poet Delmore Schwartz's poem "Sarah." Swados teaching sounds to students in her loft studio. 1978."

"Excerpts from the production at La Mama Experimental Theater Club (New York City) of Andrei Serban's interpretation of the classic dramas "Electra" and "Medea" with music by Elizabeth Swados. Theater critic Margaret Croyden provides introductions and commentary. The language of the plays combines Latin, Greek and vocalizations that, in the words of Croyden, "transcends the literal and gets to the hidden dimensions of human consciousness. It is an attempt to find a language identical to the emotion behind it."Ellen Stewart, founder and guiding spirit of "La Mama" speaks briefly about her goals in the modern theater. She has presented many avant garde works at her famous theater; few have received more critical acclaim as these experiments by Andrei Serban. New York Times theater critic Clive Barnes wrote, "Most of the time I write about plays, good, bad, or indifferent. Once in a while I get to write about the theater. This is one of those times." 1974."
