This excellent program introduces viewers to one of the most vibrant and modern cities in the world, Singapore, which is actually an independent city-state in southeastern Asia that is comprised of one major island and more than 50 small adjacent islets. Located off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore consists of an ethnically diverse population, including Chinese (about 78 percent), Malays (14 percent), and Indians (7 percent). It has a colonial influence that dates back to its founding in 1819 by the British colonial administrator Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles (for whom the Raffles Hotel, an architectural landmark, was named). This informative tour reveals how a multi-culture society successfully co-exists while each cultural group maintains its distinct identity.

Southeast Asia and the South Pacific come alive on an incredible 62-day cruise. The first stop is China's Hong Kong, the international trading city, which is a sophisticated and exotic mix of Eastern and Western cultures. Here we see Po Lin Monastery's Big Buddha on Lantau Island, Yuen Po Bird Market, and Aberdeen, home of the floating fishing village. In Vietnam, located in the eastern part of the Indochina peninsula, we visit China Beach and the Marble Mountains, as well as the industrial city of Da Nang and the ancient city of Hoi An. Singapore offers a combination of Western style development and Eastern style calm, which can undoubtedly be attributed to its history. It was originally founded by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles and achieved its independence in 1965. The Sri Mariamman Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in the country. Bali, Indonesia, is known for its friendly people, beautiful jungles and mountains, and spectacular beaches; also we visit the Goa Lawah Temple. Australia's Northern Territory capital, Darwin, is a modern city playing a pivotal role in the expansion of the Austral-Asian region. Then on the Queensland coast of the island-continent we visit the popular city of Cairns as well as the treasured rainforests. And the journey ends on the northeast coast of Australia, on the Great Barrier Reef, the site of the world's largest collection of coral reefs.

Everyone loves an exciting and adventurous train ride, but this isn't just a train ride. It's the Eastern and Oriental Express, the luxury train that travels through the heart of Southeast Asia! Following the success of the famous Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, the luxurious E&O Express made history on its inaugural run in 1993 and continues to recapture the golden age of rail travel through one of the world's most beautiful and exotic regions. The E&O Express has it all: while passengers absorb the beauty of the lush countryside, they also enjoy comfortable and elegant accommodations, delicious Asian and European food and, of course, superb service. Join us as we experience this wonderful trip. Our journey begins in Bangkok, Thailand, a beautiful city with friendly people. Along the way the train stops in Malaysia, and we take a land tour to the island of Penang, the "Pearl of the Orient" in the Strait of Malacca, to see Georgetown, a World Heritage site famous for its architecture and cultural diversity. We tour the city by trishaw, a quaint three-wheeled vehicle, and visit the Indian Market before returning to the train. Our train journey ends in Singapore, a cosmopolitan city and world financial center with a multi-cultural population, but our experience isn't complete until we see the city itself. While there we visit a Taoist temple built in 1850 and explore Little India to learn more about that culture. The E&O Express truly is a unique way to experience the full wonder of this remarkable region.
