By Sarod Khandaker. This paper proposes an implementation plan for the internationalisation process in a Banking and Financial Markets unit in an Australia University. The current structure of this unit does not encourage the internationalisation process. It was observed that international and local students worked independently throughout the semester instead of helping each other for group tasks and assignments. The implementation plan was introduced in semester 1, 2012 and found that the majority of the students accepted the plan and that multicultural activities among students groups increased. As internationalisation is a continuous process it will of course take a significant amount of time to achieve all the benefits that are discussed in this paper.

By Chandana Rathnasiri Hewege, Chamila Roshani Perera, and Dushan Chaminda Jayawickrama. This study examined how successfully wikis can foster an effective learning environment for international students in Australian universities. Language difficulties and cultural incompatibilities inhibit collaborative learning among international students resulting in a division between local and international students. Informed by engagement theory, data was collected through a three-phased mixed research method: (1) a critical incident method, (2) a content analysis, and (3) an online survey. Three thematic categories, namely, (1) Learning Through Collaboration, (2) I Am Heard in Wikis, and (3) Resistance to Wikis are found at the early phase of data analysis. The online survey found a positive relationship between wiki engagement and student performance. Further, international students who seem to engage in wikis more than local students do, perceive wikis as an effective tool which facilities their collaborative learning and engagement in meaningful discussions. These findings guide the integration of wikis in higher education and extend the existing theoretical frameworks of wiki-based pedagogies.

Simon travels from Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory, or Top End, across to the remote Cape York Peninsula, and on to the Great Barrier Reef. Simon sets off from Kakadu, the largest national park in the world, where the wildlife is under threat from the march of millions of poisonous cane toads. He joins a team of toad-busters catching the amphibian invaders - originally introduced to the country to kill pests. In Robertson barracks Simon meets Australia's best - and only - tank regiment. They will soon host 6,000 American Marines - evidence of Australia's strategic importance in the Asia Pacific region. Simon also heads out on patrol with Norforce, a unique military unit who use ancient aboriginal knowledge to help them survive in the bush. It's a case of green ant tea before bed. On the Cape York peninsula Simon joins scientists catching deadly box jellyfish, whose venom could prove to have great medicinal value. And on the Great Barrier Reef he dives in search of the starfish destroying coral, before flying 100 miles out into the ocean to watch as a huge tanker is expertly guided through the fragile reef.

Paul Hogan, of Crocodile Dundee fame and international spokesperson for Australia, introduces viewers to his homeland, a land of many contrasts, from the Outback to the wonder of the Great Barrier Reef. North Queensland we see is a paradise known for its beautiful beaches, tropical rainforests, and the Great Barrier Reef. Koranda is the heart of the aborigine tribal lands and a vibrant artistic community. Dunk Island is a continental haven, mostly designated as National Park land with a lush rain forest and tropical wildlife. Edmond Banfield, the author of Confessions of a Beach Comber, was the first white man to settle here in 1897; also Captain Cook discovered the island in 1770 and named it after the First Lord of Admiralty and the Earl of Sandwich, George Montague Dunk. Lastly, we explore the Great Barrier Reef; designated as a Marine Park, this area is one of the world's best diving spots.

By Janet Chew. This is an exploratory study, applying a qualitative methodology to investigate the teaching practices in business education in relation to problem based learning (PBL) and self directed learning (SDL). This study put issues of learners’ experience centre stage and involved interviewing ten third year undergraduate business students. The findings provide relatively strong support for the existence of a positive relationship between effective PBL teaching practices and its influence on the students’ perceptions of their learning. The results identified that PBL does foster SDL but there is also evidence that some respondents were self motivated prior to joining the university and this personal experience is a factor to be considered in the development of SDL. The lifelong learning skills ascertained from this study were collaborative problem solving skills, critical thinking skills, decision making capability, research skills, time management, and presentation and communication skills.

By Carol Dalglish, Christian Haker, Lynda Lawson, Peter Nelson, and Martin Reese. About 1.6 million students currently study outside their home country. Despite this, and the fact that Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and many of the other host countries of international students are themselves extremely culturally diverse communities, business education remains essentially mono-cultural in form and Anglo American in content. Whilst it is true that these international students may want to understand the "Western" way of doing things, they may not be familiar or comfortable with the processes used to facilitate learning. This paper explores a project undertaken to create a tool that provides essential pre-orientation information and advice to students before they leave home. Where cultural adjustment is required, catching students before departure is a very effective time to introduce key information about lifestyle, culture and approaches to teaching and learning that would assist students with the complex and difficult adjustment to studying abroad, so that they could make a smoother transition to their new place of learning. Welcome to Studying Business at QUT is a Data DVD with 19 short videos capturing a student perspective on life and study. Forty percent of the content is related to living and studying and includes sections on accommodation, lifestyle, food and transport etc., and 60% takes an in-depth look at studying business, featuring students and academics talking about issues such as assessment, academic writing and working in groups. This paper outlines the process of developing the DDVD and the range of issues addressed.

Simon's adventure starts in the magnificent 'red centre' of the continent and onwards through South Australia, via the extraordinary Indian Pacific Railway until he reaches the west coast city of Perth. On the way, he joins an Aussie rancher in the parched outback and takes part in a spectacular camel round-up. This mad aventure, involving specially adapted off-road vehicles and a chopper, is part of an ongoing effort to stop the damaging spread of up to a million feral camels across the country. Simon also passes through Australia's wine country and to the lucrative tuna fishing city of Port Lincoln, and he investigates the impact these trades are having on the environment. In Western Australia, he joins a 21st century gold rush - part of the resource boom that has made Australia one of the richest countries in the world. Finally in Perth, Simon discovers a full scale British invasion. Working in a mine or driving a lorry can bring a salary of a hundred thousand pounds a year, as evidenced when Simon meets a former binman from hull who is now living the dream, with a beautiful house in the sun, private pool and his very own boat.

Simon travels travels down the east coast to the magnificent cities of Sydney and Melbourne in the final part of his journey. Simon's journey starts in Surfers Paradise near the city of Gold Coast, the Las Vegas of Australia. Behind the sun and surf, this area has become the organised crime capital of Australia. Police are cracking down on outlaw motorcycle clubs, accused of being criminal gangs. Simon meets the most notorious and feared biker group in Australia to hear their side of the story. In the wealthy East Coast suburbs, Simon has a different kind of encounter, joining a vet and his team who rescue and treat injured koalas - thousands of which are killed each year by cars and pet dogs. Arriving in Sydney, Simon discovers a city of huge cultural diversity closely linked to its booming Asian neighbours, India and China. One in ten Aussies are now of Asian origin. Simon gauges Australia's attitude to immigration and meets the country's first Muslim ladies Aussie Rules Football team. On the very last stretch of the journey, Simon takes to the air to witness the devastating and deadly bush fires ripping through the country, before reaching his final destination, Melbourne, just in time to celebrate Australia Day.
