South Africa's wine making legacy dates back over 300 years and today Cape Winelands is the largest wine producing region in the Western Cape of the country. Our tour of this spectacular area begins at the historic Grande Roche Hotel, which was founded in 1717, and after fastidious restoration in 1993 was declared a national monument. We visit one of the largest wine makers in the world, KWV, an acronym for a name in Dutch, which means 'Co-operative Winemakers' Society of South Africa Ltd.' Then we meet winemakers at the Kanonkop Wine Estate, located on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain. Next we meet a former rugby star, Jannie Engelbrecht, who acquired the Rust en Vrede Wine Estate, which became the first private winery in the country to specialize in the exclusive production of red wines. At the Van Loveren Estate, which has been in the Retief family since 1937, matriarch Oma Retief guides us through her beautiful garden; also we visit De Wetshof Estate, one of South Africa's premier chardonnay houses, tour the KWV Cathedral Cellar, and end our visit in the Paarl region at the Backsberg Estate.

The Scottish explorer Dr. David Livingstone was the first white person to discover Victoria Falls and named them in honor of Queen Victoria. Also known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, which means "the Smoke that Thunders," the falls have been named "One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World," and this program, with its spectacular aerial footage that offers a bird's-eye view of the falls and the Zambezi River (literally, the "Great River"), proves why. The falls' width and height form the largest sheet of falling water in the world; also their unusual form allows visitors to view the whole width of the falls face-on. It is no wonder that the falls are one of Africa's major tourist attractions, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Shared between Zambia and Zimbabwe, each country has a national park to protect the falls and a town that serves as a tourism center. On the Zimbabwe side, we visit the Victoria Falls Hotel, a featured landmark, built in 1904, to accommodate travelers as a result of Cecil Rhodes' dream to bring the railway from Cape Town to Cairo. Also, in the Falls Crafts Village, we learn that bargaining is a way of life in this shopping center known for its woodcarvings and sculptures.

Taipei is the capital city of the Republic of China and is located in Taiwan, an island in the Pacific off the coast of mainland China, which governs the island; it also is the administrative, commercial, manufacturing, and cultural center of the island. Here we find the National Palace Museum, which houses the largest collection of Chinese art in the world; the Longshan Temple, one of over 5,000 beautiful and ornate temples on the island; the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, erected in memory of the former president, where we witness the "changing of the guard"; and the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, a memorial to China's National Father, Dr.Sun Yat-sen. Nearby is the popular "Window on China" theme park, a miniature world of traditional Chinese buildings and sites in mainland China and Taiwan; plus "Mini Kingdom," which contains more than 50 sets of miniature landscapes found throughout the world, such as the Pyramids and Mount Rushmore. Back in Taipei we view a lavish set of the Chinese Opera Theater; then explore the famous night market in Snake Alley. This excellent program introduces viewers to one of the most vibrant and modern cities in the world, Singapore, which is actually an independent city-state in southeastern Asia that is comprised of one major island and more than 50 small adjacent islets. Located off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore consists of an ethnically diverse population, including Chinese (about 78 percent), Malays (14 percent), and Indians (7 percent). It has a colonial influence that dates back to its founding in 1819 by the British colonial administrator Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles (for whom the Raffles Hotel, an architectural landmark, was named). This informative tour reveals how a multi-culture society successfully co-exists while each cultural group maintains its distinct identity.

Healing from a history of war is helping Vietnam take major steps into the modern world; still it retains its sublime beauty and remains a country of enchantment. Here we witness its cultural growth and natural beauty from the open markets in the coastal city of Da Nang, the major port in the central part of Vietnam, known for art and architecture from the Cham dynasty. South to Hoi An, known as the "Ancient City," it was established in the 15th century by the Chinese as a major trading port. To the Marble Mountains, also called Ngu Hanh Son or Mountains of the Five Elements, one for each peak, this area is famous for its traditional practices of stone engraving. Nearby is China Beach, a beautiful secluded beach made famous by the popular television series of the same name. Next we fly to Bali; called "Paradise Island," it is the most popular destination in Indonesia, known for its friendly people, sculptured rice paddies, beautiful jungles, lush mountain scenery, and spectacular beaches. The majority of Balinese are Hindu and here we visit the Goa Lawah Temple, a Shivaite temple founded over 1000 years ago; also we explore its well known "bat cave."

The Domain of Killien is located in the Haliburton Highlands and is a sophisticated hotel with superb food. Visitors can choose between cabins around a lake or the main lodge, and winter activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and ice-skating, while water sports and hiking may be enjoyed in the summer. Next we reminisce in visiting Gray Rock Resort, once a popular resort outside of Montreal that offered amenities such as a pool, saunas, and exercise equipment, as well as weekly ski classes and mini-tournaments. The final destination is one of the most popular ski resorts outside of Quebec City, Mont Sainte Anne. This luxury resort has the highest elevation in Canada and offers year-round activities. Golf, mountain biking, and paragliding are just a few of the activities enjoyed in the summer, while cross-country skiing, dog sledding, and night skiing are highlights of the winter fun.

Three cities provide insight into the culture and history of the South American country of Chile. The first city is Punta Arenas, located on the shores of the Straits of Magellan and the largest city in the region. Translated as "sandy point," the city is also known as "the city of red roofs" because of its colorful skyline. It is the southernmost city in South America and reached its golden age between 1850 and 1914 due to its wool and fishing industries. Its imposing cathedral on the central square and its 19th century architecture reflect this boom time, and the memorial statue to Ferdinand Magellan recalls its history. We visit a sheep ranch and a rookery to see the penguins before heading north to Puerto Montt, a fishing center settled by German immigrants in the late 1800s. Situated on a narrow coastal plain with the Andes Mountains in the background, Puerto Montt is a tranquil city with an active fishing economy, and its German heritage is evident in its alpine houses with balconies. It is the gateway to Chile's Lake District, and the active volcano Orsano dominates the area. We visit Orsano National Park and Emerald Lake created by the volcano and then travel north to Valparaiso, the most cosmopolitan city of the three. Once a major stop for ships traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans before the Panama Canal was built, Valparaiso remains an important seaport as well as cultural center for the region. These three cities reflect the beauty, history, and culture of this vast country.

This is a wonderful opportunity to visit two of the most visited sites in all of Egypt, Luxor and Aswan. Featuring some of the largest and best-preserved stone temples of ancient times, Luxor has been called the world's greatest open-air museum. It is the site of ancient Thebes, the chief city of Egypt over 4,000 years ago, and is home to the Temple of Luxor, once the center for the important festival known as Opet. Here you become absorbed in the history of such ancient figures as Tutankhamun and Alexander the Great. Next we journey south on the Nile River to Aswan to see what is considered among the most magnificent monuments in the world: the Great Temples at Abu Simbel, constructed for Ramseses II who reigned for 67 years during the 13th century BC (19th Dynasty). Threatened by submersion into Lake Nasser in the mid-1960s, these temples of the pharaoh and his favorite wife, Nefertari, were cut and moved to higher ground.
