- Abstract / Summary
- Hutchinson’s experiences during World War II. Met with Albert Kleckner on Dec 7, 1941, to discuss Quakerism, then heard about Pearl Harbor. Notes consequences for her Japanese friends, the Nukunya family; father carried off for questioning by the FBI, lost their fire insurance. Friends Mission Board helped the family. Mentions Charles Clayton Morrison’s articles in the Christian Century about the theology of going to war, which challenged her as a pacifist. Hutchinson wrote an article in response (typed letters included). Disappointed by the pacifists, like Losdick’s radio addresses, who refused to be belligerent about peace during World War II. Annoyed by self-satisfied and complacent Quakers, but also D. Elton Trueblood’s unconditional surrender argument. Joined the Quaker Philadelphia Yearly Meeting’s Peace Committee at the insistence of her husband, Cranford Hutchinson; spoke forcefully about pacifism. Includes a handwritten letter from Hutchinson to Richard Wood: discussion of Morrison’s position on negotiated peace. Thinks the Richmond Conference’s statement must go farther in supporting peace. Asked to be the representative at the Pendle Hill summer session, and while there Hutchinson wrote “Quaker Recommendations to Belligerent Governments” with the help of Anna Broomell. Hutchinson spoke on negotiated peace at the Race St. Yearly Meeting at the request of Hannah Clothier Hull. Hutchinson includes a list of her many speaking engagements in 1943. Outline and notes for speeches on pacifism, including quotes from people like Woodrow Wilson.
