Abstract / Summary

The International Abolitionist Federation met in Rome in October 1950 to discuss prostitution and related phenomena during its annual meeting. The first article presented at the conference explains the history of abolitionism and regulation and then provides an overview of how prostitution has been theorized throughout the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, including in such disciplines as criminal anthropology, psychoanalysis, Marxism, and libertarian communism. The next article, entitled “By Which Legal Means Can We Fight Prostitution?” argues that those in favor of regulated prostitution miss the psychological, moral, social, and economic complexities of the trade, which must be adequately explained in order to make the case for abolitionism. An article on Italy’s recent “legal solution” follows, as do various articles examining sexuality, sanitation, mental health, and the rehabilitation of former prostitutes.
